Channing Tatum revealed the surprising reason why he turned down Ryan Gosling's role in the 2010 movie Blue Valentine.
Tatum, 45, stars in director Derek Cianfrance’s upcoming movie Roofman, though he recently reflected on turning down the role that ultimately went to Gosling, 44, in Blue Valentine. The film follows an intense love story about a couple played by Gosling and Michelle Williams.
While accepting the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Performer Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards on Sunday, September 7, Tatum admitted he was “absolutely terrified” of the role.
"As I was just reminded, it was about 20 years ago that I did kind of one of my first real, I guess, acting roles, and Derek saw it and, and he believed in me, I think way before I ever believed in myself,” he said, according to People. “And that was why I think I couldn't go on that journey. I just … I was just scared. I was absolutely terrified of that role specifically, and I didn't go.”
A recent Variety feature explained that Cianfrance, 51, was impressed with Tatum's starring role in the 2006 drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and he asked him to take the lead part in Blue Valentine.

“He’s got this physicality — this body that can tell stories,” Cianfrance told the outlet of Tatum, explaining that he viewed him as a Marlon Brando type.
While Tatum now admits he turned down the role, he recently said he didn't remember discussing the possibility of him joining the movie. "I think I blocked it out because I probably, on some level, regret it,” he told Variety, adding that he was probably "scared of it" because hadn’t "really lived" what the characters were going through.
Also during TIFF, Tatum insisted that Gosling "killed it" in the role. He also told CBC News that he didn't feel comfortable taking the role because he “hadn’t been in a relationship like that at that time.”
