ROCHESTER, N.Y. — What do teens dream of on their 16th birthday? It’s probably getting a drivers license. One duo in Canandaigua reached for the skies instead.
Two 16-year-old twins, Owen and Wyatt Schubert, took their first solo flight on their birthday, continuing a family tradition of flying that dates back to 1954. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake caught up with them on Monday for the milestone.
“It felt kind of normal because we’ve been doing it for so long. We can fly a plane by ourselves when I drive a car. Yeah, it’s kind of weird,” the twins said.
Flying has been a family affair for the Schuberts, with their father, Chris Schubert, emphasizing the family’s aviation legacy.
“It’s a legacy. I mean, we’ve been flying. She has been flying since 1954, in Monroe County. So it’s kind of neat. And you can’t force people. Not everybody likes it. And we never force our kids. It’s just something if you want to do it, do it,” Chris said.
The day began with a final ride with their parents before their solo flights. Wyatt, being the firstborn twin, took off first after a coin flip. The twins share a friendly rivalry, with Wyatt teasingly claiming to be the better pilot.
After landing, the twins participated in the tradition of losing the back of their shirts, a nod to the days when instructors would tug on students’ shirts for attention.
“Everybody asked if we were nervous and I would say that they’ve had really great foundation of instruction and we’ve been out with them a few times before. And so I think this guy was really nervous. They’re always a little nervous on their first one, but they have had good instruction,” said Chris and Jill.
The celebration continued with a birthday song for the twins. They also visited the DMV to ensure they were also legal on the roads. They’ll be eligible for their full pilot licenses on their 17th birthday.
The Schubert family owns the Rochester Air Center, the largest flight school in Western New York, and the Canandaigua Air Center, the largest aircraft maintenance facility in the area.
