Chicago suburb says ICE presence ‘likely in coming days in message to residents

As Immigration activity in Chicago and the suburbs was expected to ramp up, the city of Evanston issued a “community awareness statement,” warning residents of an increased ICE presence.

“Late this weekend, the City of Evanston was informed of the likelihood that federal immigration agents will be present in our community in the coming days,” the statement, issued Monday, said. “We take this potentiality seriously and urge community members to be aware and report sightings of federal agents to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights hotline immediately (855-435-7693 or icirr.org).“

The statement went on to say “It is important to know your rights in any interaction with federal agents.“

“In Evanston, we welcome our immigrant and refugee neighbors and protect each other,” the statement added. “The City has not requested the presence of federal immigration officers targeting our community members, and we will do all we can to safeguard our community and keep Evanston families together.”

Over the weekend, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker shared a similar message to residents, about what to do if they encounter a federal agent in their neighborhood. Last week, other suburbs put out similar messages to residents, including Highland Park and Waukegan.

At least 300 federal agents were expected to arrive at the Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago last week as part of the Trump Administration’s enhanced operations from ICE, Customs and Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security, North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr. said.

Typically joyful celebrations for the upcoming Mexican Independence Day have led some organizations to cancel their events due to expected surge of ICE agents.

“The timing of these actions is particularly troubling, as Latino families across Illinois celebrate the independence of several nations during September in addition to Hispanic heritage month,” a statement form the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus said. “This calculated strategy targeting our community reflects a disturbing pattern by this administration — using the guise of law enforcement to justify harmful actions.”

Monday afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security posted on X that it was launching “Operation Midway Midway Blitz,” in Illinois. According to the agency, the operation will “target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets.”

Shortly after that statement, ICE posted a photo with a parked ICE car with Chicago’s famous Willis Tower in the background.

“In an ICE-led operation, we are here to remove these dangerous public safety threats from American communities,” the post said.
