Montenegrin Water Polo Player Aleksa Ukoprina’s Two-Year Doping Suspension Upheld

Montenegrin water polo athlete Aleksa Ukoprina will continue to serve a two-year doping suspension after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was dismissed.

Ukoprina was part of Montenegro’s gold-medal-winning team at the 2021 World League Super Final. A Ukoprina sample dated January 21, 2024 tested positive for fenoterol, a beta-2 agonist found in some asthma treatment medication. The Aquatic Integrity Unit (AQIU) gave the now-26-year-old a two-year suspension for his positive test beginning on February 14, 2024. The organization also disqualified all of Ukoprina’s performances between January 21 and February 14.

Ukoprina appealed the suspension to the CAS, the arbitration organization that all athletes must go through to resolve conflicts with their sports organizations. In his appeal, he stated that the fenoterol entered his system through medically prescribed Berodual drops, which he says he used in a medical emergency. These circumstances, Ukoprina argued, warranted for a lighter suspension in the 0-24 month sanction spectrum, as he argued he bears no significant fault or negligence.

World Aquatics, meanwhile, said that he didn’t properly disclose his alleged medical emergency to the organization, and that regardless of circumstances, he still bore significant fault.

The CAS dismissed the case, and Ukoprina will continue to serve his suspension until February 14, 2026.

The AQIU said in a statement that it welcomed the ruling, and it reminded athletes that they are responsible for any substances in their bodies.

During Ukoprina’s suspension, the Montenegro men’s water polo team placed 8th at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, 9th at the Paris Olympics, and 6th at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore. The Balkan country also hosted the 2025 Water Polo World Cup final, an event in which the team placed 5th.

The CAS’ final authority in sports has been challenged this year by an Advocate General for the European Court of Justice. This could affect the appellate process for future cases if taken any further.
