Detective Benoit Blanc is back!
Netflix has released the first trailer for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third installment in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery franchise.
Daniel Craig reprises his role as the Southern sleuth, who faces what the trailer teases as his “most dangerous case yet.”
The new chapter introduces a fresh ensemble of suspects, led by Josh O’Connor as a young priest and Josh Brolin as a fiery monsignor. The small-town parish they inhabit is populated by figures ranging from Glenn Close’s devout Martha Delacroix to Jeremy Renner’s town doctor and Kerry Washington’s tightly wound lawyer.
When an impossible murder shatters the community, Blanc joins forces with police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to uncover the truth.
Johnson once again writes and directs, continuing the series that began with 2019’s Knives Out and followed by 2022’s Glass Onion. The Academy Award-nominated director has been vocal about his passion for the genre’s flexibility.
“I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is,” he posted on X in March 2024. “There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.”
Wake Up Dead Man also shares its title with a 1997 U2 song off their album Pop.
“Pop is a very underrated album, and that song is very right for the title,” Johnson told Netflix's Tudum. “But I’ve had ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ in my head for a long while, and I first heard the phrase in American folk music.”
The director also described his casting process as akin to assembling guests for a dinner party.
“We’ve been very lucky with each of these movies to have gathered some of my favorite actors on the planet, and that’s absolutely the case here,” Johnson said. “They’re also all lovely folks who get along, which is the dinner party aspect of it. When you’re making an ensemble movie like this, I think that’s key.”
What are fans saying?
Soon after the trailer dropped, fans were quick to offer their views about the shift in the franchise's tone.
"The first was great, the second was a somewhat bland rehash of the same concept, but the idea here looks fresh. I’ll give it a watch," one fan wrote.
"I love these movies so much," added another. "I hope Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig just keep pushing them out until they run out of actors to hire for all the characters lol."
One fan wrote: "I hope it lives up to the hype!!!!" while another praised the film's potential as being "fantastic" and "interesting."
One film buff even shared: "This is ULTIMATE Rian Johnson x Daniel Craig x masterclass cast CINEMA."
When Does the New Knives Out Movie Come Out?
The film will open in select theaters on Nov. 26 before streaming globally on Netflix beginning Dec. 12.
The ensemble includes Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church, rounding out what Johnson has called another “murderers’ row” of talent.
The first Knives Out introduced Blanc as he unraveled the death of mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey, while Glass Onion transported him to a Greek island amid tech-fueled chaos. This time, Blanc finds himself in a far more sinister setting — and with a case that promises to test him like never before.
Needless to say: We're dying to discover more!
