Debbie Gibson Calls Memoir ‘Terrifying’ as She Reflects on Teen Pop Stardom

Debbie Gibson has lived a life most teenagers could only dream of, but turning those stories into a book was a new type of hurdle to overcome entirely. The former teen pop sensation said writing her memoir Eternally Electric: The Message in My Music was both exhilarating and overwhelming.

"I mean, listen, it's terrifying, the idea of putting out a book,” Gibson, 54, told People earlier this year ahead of the memoir’s September 9 release. "Somebody said, 'Is it harder than writing a song?' I'm like, a song is 4 minutes, and a book is 90,000 words. It has been such a cathartic and exhausting process."

However, the “Only In My Dreams” singer said she hopes that if her book does anything, it “inspires people.”

"I always felt like the girl who was like, people would say, 'Well, if you could do it, I could do it,’” Gibson told the publication. “I hope they read this book and they say, 'Oh my God, you went through that? I went through that. And you turned that around. Great, I want to turn that around.’ And that's really the entire purpose for me."

The memoir covers Gibson’s rise to fame in the late ‘80s when she became the youngest artist to write, produce and perform a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single with “Foolish Beat.” However, it also digs into deeply personal chapters, from panic attacks and industry pressures to the loss of her beloved mother, Diane, who was also her longtime manager.

She recalled how her mom fought for her to have creative control of “Foolish Beat,” and said she remembered Diane “pounding her fist in the conference room to do that.”

“I really speak a lot about that male-dominated music world we were in together,” Gibson said to the New York Post in June.

She admitted she could only be this candid after her mother’s passing.

“I think I did her justice and told my mom’s and my story honestly and effectively,” the “Electric Youth” artist explained to the Los Angeles Times earlier this year.

Why Debbie Gibson Says the Book Is a Love Letter to Fans

With Eternally Electric arriving September 9, Gibson said the book is a love letter to her fans and a chance to connect across generations. “Writing my memoir during this profound second act is a way to celebrate the connection I have to my longtime audience,” she explained to People, adding that she hopes new readers will find comfort in her honesty.
