Managing the Present, Eyeing October — Cubs vs Braves – Series Preview

Cubs vs Braves — Like Brett said this morning, the Cubs’ chances in the NL Central are cooked. Put it out of your mind (if it wasn’t already). I admit I fell back into the trap for a moment there, but the losses over the weekend ended those dreams. Instead, focus on keeping the top Wild Card slot in order to earn a home series in the Wild Card round. That would be good enough.

To that end, the Cubs have two of their hottest pitchers, Shota Imanaga and Cade Horton, set to take on the Braves in Atlanta. Wednesday’s starter is still TBD.

Imanaga faced the Braves just last week, tossing a quality start, albeit with a couple of homers allowed, while Horton tossed five hitless, scoreless innings before being preemptively (and appropriately) removed at 75 pitches. A repeat of those performances will do just fine if you ask me.

Unfortunately, the Cubs also have their work cut out for them in terms of pitching matchups.

Tonight, they’ll get Bryce Elder, who is on one hell of a heater over his last three starts, all of which came against competitive teams (including the Cubs):

    vsNYM: 6.0 IP, 2H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K @PHI: 7.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 3K @CHC: 7.0 IP, 4H, 0ER, 0BB, 6K

Tomorrow, they’ll get Spencer Strider, who’s alternating between blowups and quality+ starts, going back to early June. And on Wednesday, they get Chris Sale, who’s dominated since returning from the Injured List: 12.2 IP, 2ER, 1BB, 18K against the Phillies and Mariners.

That’s just not an easy slate, especially if the Cubs are going to play without Kyle Tucker (definitely today, at least) and Pete Crow-Armstrong (TBD). Plus, Daniel Palencia is hurt.

Again, the focus remains on the end of the month/early October, but the Cubs should still want to lock up that top wild-card slot. And they’re not there yet.
