It’s good to be back.
Football season is off and running with a full slate of games kicking off. The first Sunday of the 2025 season saw some surprise performances and shocking results.

WINNER: Rookie debuts
The league’s youngest players made it look easy on Sunday.
Three rookie running backs found the end zone, including Las Vegas Raiders first-rounder Ashton Jeanty. The consensus top rusher from this year’s class had 37 yards in his debut. Elsewhere, Washington Commanders seventh-rounder Jacory Croskey-Merritt had a touchdown and 38 yards and Cleveland Browns undrafted rookie Raheim Snaders had a goal line score.
The rookie receivers were impressive, too. Emeka Egbuka of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers led the team with 67 receiving yards and two touchdowns — including a game-winning 25-yard grab with under a minute to go. Travis Hunter and Tet McMillan both stood out for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers in their matchup, too.
LOSER: Russell Wilson
One of the most hyped teams in the preseason got off to a slow start, largely thanks to their quarterback.
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson held his team back in a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders. The veteran went 17 of 37 for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. It wasn’t disastrous in terms of turnovers, but the Giants’ offense had no pop all afternoon against what many expected to be a mediocre Commanders defense. Calls for rookie Jaxson Dart will only get louder heading into Week 2.
The ageless Bobby Wagner led Washington with 10 total tackles, including one for loss. Veteran pass-rushers Daron Payne and Dorance Armstrong had a sack each. Jayden Daniels, meanwhile, began his second season with an efficient 233 passing yards and 71 rushing yards, adding a touchdown pass to Zach Ertz.
WINNER: Aaron Rodgers AND Justin Fields
Week 1 can get weird — and that was certainly the case on Sunday.
The New York Jets started Justin Fields at quarterback and the Pittsburgh Steelers started Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. In Week 1 last year, the Jets started Rodgers and the Steelers started Fields.
With both players looking for a classic revenge game, each delivered in ways that they never did for their old teams. Rodgers went 22 of 30 for 244 yards and four touchdowns in a throwback performance. Fields had a career day — 16 of 22, 218 passing touchdowns, 48 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.
In the end, Pittsburgh defeated New York on a 60-yard field goal by Chris Boswell with just over a minute to play. That put the Steelers ahead 34-32, and the defense then sealed the victory with a turnover on downs.
LOSER: Dolphins dominated
It was an ugly opening game from start to finish for the Miami Dolphins.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa began his season with an interception followed by a lost fumble. It didn’t improve at all in the second half, as he opened with another interception and then a turnover on downs before finally scoring a late touchdown. The Indianapolis Colts went on to win 33-8.
On the other side, the Colts were thoroughly impressive on both sides of the ball. Daniel Jones was steady at QB as Indy jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead, while scoring on all four first-half possessions. Jones went 22 of 29 with 272 passing yards, one passing touchdown and two rushing scores in the victory, as the Colts ended an 11-year winless streak in season-openers (0-10-1).
WINNER: Pete Carroll
On a day when he became the oldest man to coach an NFL game, Pete Carroll is back in the win column.
The Las Vegas Raiders head coach, at 73 years and 357 days old, returned after a year away from football with a vintage performance against the New England Patriots. Maxx Crosby and Co. made life miserable for Patriots QB Drake Maye, with a combined three sacks and six tackles for loss as a team.
Geno Smith brought a composed presence to the Las Vegas offense, going 24 of 34 for 362 yards with a touchdown and an interception. After trailing 10-7 at the half, the Raiders scored 13 straight points in the second half to walk out of Gillette Stadium with an easy 20-13 win (New England added a late field goal).
LOSER: Weather delays
For the second time in the first week of the season, a game was delayed by lightning.
This time it was in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars-Panthers game had an even longer delay than the Kickoff Game in Philadelphia on Thursday. The teams were sidelined for over an hour as weather cleared through Florida.
