“The Valley of 0-0”
If the Bills went 14-3, I wouldn’t be surprised. If the Bills went 10-7, it would definitely be a disappointment, but they’d still likely eek into the postseason. Both doors, and every one in between, lead to the same destination–a date with one of the game’s elite passers and the expectation of “Super Bowl or Bust.”
The funny thing is–this is year three? Four? Of “Super Bowl or Bust” for the Buffalo Bills. They have yet to win it all or flame out, for that matter. And yet outside of an Eagles repeat or a Chiefs return to the top, the Bills will probably be the hottest “Super Bowl” pick in the league. And they should be for two reasons–one, they’re a great team and two, because there’s this sense among both fans and analysts alike that this–the almost annual loss to the Chiefs–just can’t keep happening.
“I know this, the season isn’t decided in week one,” head coach Sean McDermott said on Wednesday’s presser.
It sounds like coach speak, it smells like coach speak, it looks like coach speak. However, he’s right. Since the start of the 2021 season, the Bills have 48 wins in 67 games, the second-best winning percentage in the league, only behind the Chiefs. In that same span, they’re 2-2 in the first week of the season with a pair of borderline embarrassing losses to Zach Wilson and an aging Ben Roethlisberger. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome–take a breath.
Right now, the Bills, just 27 other teams, are 0-0. They’ll lose a game or two this year that’ll make you scratch your head–a November flop against an Urban Meyer-led Jaguars team, a walkoff touchdown from Mac Jones, or an overtime loss to Kirk Cousins that’ll make you ask, “How did that just happen?” as you leave your seat. They’ll also win a bunch of games to make you think “this is the year!”–Another regular-season win against the Chiefs in a game where everybody is watching, a 40-point thumping of a division rival, or a shutout of a middling, tanking team.
I don’t think predictions matter with this team. It’ll be different, but feel the same. The middle of January as one of the final eight teams standing. Cold air, close to even odds, and a series of unfair, wrenching, almost twisted fourth-quarter letdowns begging to be ended. Is this the year? We’ll find out later.
But until then–enjoy it. The stories, the players, the coaches–all of it.
