Pepperdine raised ‘Waves of Flags’ on Saturday to honor 9/11 victims

Pepperdine University set up its annual Waves of Flags on Saturday in Malibu to honor and remember the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 known as 9/11.

More than 300 volunteers including students, faculty members and staff from the university, raised American flags representing those who were killed — and also one national flag for each foreign country who lost citizens that day.

Planting the first flag this year at the university’s Alumni Park in Malibu was John Bossler, a Pepperdine 1980 alumnus who was at the World Trade Center in New York City when the terrorists crashed two planes into the 110-story-tall Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and destroyed the entire complex.

Pepperdine’s Senior Vice Chancellor Hung Le (’87, and Master of Arts ’03) gave opening remarks at Saturday’s flag-raising ceremony in Malibu.

The eye-catching flag display has been an annual remembrance since 2008 at the university that overlooks the Pacific Ocean — at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road.

The university holds its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11 also at Alumni Park.

The keynote speaker is actor Dennis Quaid, who was the narrator of the documentary film “Twin Towers: Legacy” and has supported the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps families of first responders. Quaid’s wife, Laura Savoie, is a Pepperdine University alumna (’14).

The university’s Chancellor Sara Young Jackson (’74) and Pepperdine’s President and CEO Jim Gash (Juris Doctor ’93) were are also scheduled to give remarks. Details on the Remembrance Ceremony can be found at pepperdine.edu/waves-of-flags

The Waves of Flags is up through Sept. 26, until volunteers lower the flags beginning at 10 a.m. that Friday.

In addition to the annual flag display and the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, the private Christian university has a permanent remembrance, the Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Heroes Garden.

Burnett (MBA ’95), a Graziadio Business School alumnus, was among those aboard the fourth hijacked jetliner, United Airlines Flight 93. Burnett and other passengers led a revolt against the hijackers but the plane crashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania (Flight 93 National Memorial Pennsylvania: www.nps.gov/flni/index.htm).
