Pittsford freshman works to raise awareness about sustainable black walnuts

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Freshman Finn Bates from Pittsford has embarked on a unique project to raise awareness about the black walnut, a native tree species. He aims to harvest the edible nuts often found on the ground and help feed those in need.

“So I’ve lived in Pittsford my whole life,” Bates said. “And every year I’ve seen how there’s black walnuts that fall from the trees, and I’ve seen trashcan upon trashcan of them get thrown out.”

Bates said he hopes to build public support for the black walnut by highlighting its sustainability and encouraging its consumption.

“They’re actually really sustainable and not a lot of people know that,” Bates said. “So I’m trying to raise awareness of this so they can be consumed more commonly since they’re so sustainable.”

Bates also shared that the walnuts can be used as a topping in foods.
