Ryan Reynolds’ comedic timing usually lands amongst fans, but a laughable on set mistake got him in hot water with Denzel Washington.
The actors teamed up in the 2012 film Safe House and delivered an emotional final scene. However, an ‘inexcusable’ mishap on the Deadpool star’s behalf almost cost the entire cast and crew of Denzel’s powerful performance.
"It's a powerful scene; he's crying," Ryan, 48, reflected to an audience at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 5. "With this guy, with an emotional scene, you get it twice. You get it once, and then you get it twice. The second time, if you f--k up, that's on you, it's not going to be on him, and he's leaving, so you better get it!"
Ryan, who was “really scared” and “terrified” working with Denzel, 70, in the first place, forgot to silence his phone during the climactic scene.
"[Denzel’s] been shot, wounded, dying, admits all the stuff that he did wrong. Tears start rolling down his face,” the Canadian actor continued. “And suddenly you hear — and this is take two, by the way, because take one there was a technical problem — we hear [Frank Sinatra singing] 'Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away.'"

The film’s director, Daniel Espinosa, was the first person in the room to address the ringtone going off and asked, “Who the f--k's phone is that?”
Denzel eventually broke character and repeated Daniel’s question … and even the stuntmen who were playing dead inquired about the disruption. While trying to take the attention off him, Ryan recalled chiming in, “Who the f--k's phone is that? Inexcusable!”
Ryan shared that Daniel, 48, was the only person in the room to realize it was his phone going off, and distracted Denzel by asking if he could shoot the scene for a third time.
“And [Denzel] was like, 'We're going to have to, aren't we?' And I'm like, 'Yes, [because of] the stunt men!" Reynolds concluded.
