Cubs Share Some Good News on Kyle Tucker’s Calf Injury

The only thing – the ONLY thing – that matters with respect to Kyle Tucker from now until the end of the regular season is making sure he’s ready to go for the playoffs. I know the Cubs aren’t mathematically eliminated from winning the NL Central, and I know they haven’t sewn up the top Wild Card slot yet. But their chances of making the playoffs (by way of a WC slot) are overwhelming. We have to – and I think the Cubs will – keep that in mind.

All of which is to say, if the Cubs thought Kyle Tucker needed to go on the Injured List for his calf injury, they’d do it. And they probably would’ve done it today. Honestly, with the news that Owen Caissie was scratched last night, I was expecting it. But Craig Counsell spoke to the media before today’s game and seemed to imply that the IL was not happening yet.

And he even had some good news to share.

“We think we have time to let this heal without putting him on the injured list. We think he’ll be ready before what an Injured List would cost him. And we also, with having the extra (roster spot) in September, feel like we’re not playing short, really….We’re still going to be conservative with it, but because today, we felt like we saw improvement, we think it’s worth basically taking it day-to-day….”

Tucker was first removed from the game on September 2, and the Cubs had until yesterday to backdate an IL stint the maximum three days (they didn’t, obviously). If they had, Tucker would have only had to miss 5-6 more games because of the off-day. So it seems as though the Cubs think they can get him back before then. Normally, this is something we rag on the Cubs for fumbling (because they always do), but Counsell is correct that it’s less of an issue with the extra roster spot.

It also doesn’t hurt that Ian Happ, taking Tucker’s spot in the batting order, has been crushing the ball throughout the second half. Likewise, it would be nice if the extra exposure for Willi Castro could help wake his bat up before the playoffs, when he’ll likely be heavily featured as a supporting player/sub.

In any case, it’s nice to learn that the Cubs saw some improvement today. And it’s even nicer to see Kyle Tucker running and cutting around the outfield.

Come back soon, Tuck. But not before you’re ready.
