Hargitay and Hermann first met when he was a guest star on season 3 of Law & Order: SVU, she later recalled how he asked her to go to church with him.
"We went to church together, and it was like getting hit with a lightning bolt," Hargitay said during an interview with People published on June 13, 2019. "I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one."

They expanded their family once again when they adopted daughter Amaya Josephine Hermann in April 2011, followed by the adoption of their second son, Andrew Nicolas Herman, just six months later.
"We never in a million years thought it would happen this quickly, but something inside of us knew that this was right, and we said, 'Yes, yes, yes!” Hargitay told the outlet at the time. "We knew this was our guy. It felt divinely right."
