MISSION VIEJO — Mission Viejo hosted one of Northern California’s top teams Friday and gave the visitors a hostile welcome to Southern California.
The Diablos dominated Folsom 53-14 in a matchup between two teams ranked in the Top 10 in the state.
Folsom (2-1) entered Friday as the top-ranked team in the CIF San Joaquin Section and was coming off a win against Northern California powerhouse Serra of San Mateo.
The game featured two quarterbacks committed to major colleges: Folsom’s Ryder Lyons (BYU) and Mission Viejo’s Luke Fahey (Ohio State).
Lyons entered Friday averaging 398 passing yards per game with eight touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns. Mission Viejo (3-0) solved the Lyons problem by sacking him eight times and held him to a season-low 177 yards.
“That offense was scoring 50 points per game and Ryder Lyons is a phenomenal quarterback,” Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson said. “Our game plan was to mix everything up, confuse him just enough to get him off his first two reads. Coach (Ryan) Koh and the defensive staff do a phenomenal job.”
Fahey was outstanding, completing 21 of 31 passes for 326 yards with five touchdowns. He threw touchdowns to four different receivers and six different players had at least three catches.
Mission Viejo was playing without Miami committed receiver Vance Spafford, who is nursing an ankle injury. Johnson feels it’s important to develop the other receivers while Spafford is out.
“It makes us tough to defend,” Johnson said. “Him being out allows us to spread the ball around. Then when he comes back, the ball will still be spread around but with Vance Spafford there too. Any play could go goodnight.”
Fahey relished the opportunity to play against Lyons and downplayed any sort of rivalry between the two top quarterbacks.
“We are two kids living out a dream of playing college football,” Fahey said. “He’s a great guy and it was good to get out here and play against him because he’s been hitting me up asking to play.”
Mission Viejo opened the game with a 3-play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Fahey to Luke Karby.
Fahey threw the first of his two touchdown passes to KJ Woodbury Jr. to give the Diablos a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Folsom cut Mission Viejo’s lead to eight after a 22-yard touchdown pass from Lyons to Rob Larson.
The Diablos scored 23 unanswered points in the first half with a pass from Fahey to Woodbury Jr. and rushing touchdowns by Davonte Curtis and Dallas Miller.
In the second quarter, Brady Bowman had Lyons wrapped up in the endzone and Lyons threw the ball out of bounds which resulted in an intentional grounding penalty being called for a safety.
Mission Viejo’s defense had seven sacks in the first half, three by Northern Arizona commit JD Hill. Hill had four sacks in the game and forced another safety in the fourth quarter.
“We emphasized containing the pocket. He’s a great quarterback so we took our time trying to contain him,” Hill said. “We know that everybody is pass blocking to my side, so we try to mix things up and get me away from the pocket so I can make plays.”

Fahey threw touchdown passes to Jack Junker and Max Markofski in the second half. Woodbury Jr. led the Diablos in receiving with 94 yards on five receptions and Junker had 70 yards on three catches.
Folsom scored on a double pass from Lyons to Larson to Jameson Powell in the third quarter. Powell, an Ole Miss commit, caught 12 passes for 175 yards.
Mission Viejo will play Lincoln of San Diego next Friday. Lincoln is the top-ranked team in the San Diego Section and has won two consecutive State championships.
“Lincoln is really good so we don’t have much time to celebrate,” Johnson said. “We played a top NorCal team now let’s play a top San Diego team. I think it’s fun.”
