LOS ANGELES — Last year, Los Alamitos suffered defeat with a running clock against Serra.
Friday, the Griffins (4-0) jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring the first points of any team this season against the Cavaliers and then used a wild nine-point sequence right before halftime to take control of this year’s nonleague meeting on their way to a 41-21 win at L.A. Southwest College.
“We’re battling and in the fight and we get a break,” Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton said.
With Los Alamitos leading 19-14, the Griffins scored on a safety and then added a touchdown, all within the final 45 seconds of the half. The first “break” was a safety after a punt eluded Serra’s return man DeVohn Moutra and by the time he caught up to it, he was smothered in the end zone, giving the Griffins a 21-14 lead.
After the kickoff, the Griffins didn’t waste any time as Colin Creason rolled out to his right and found Lenny Ibarra, who outjumped two Serra defenders and went in for a 45-yard touchdown and a 28-14 lead at halftime.
“Like he always does, Lenny shows up with a big play and gets us in the end zone,” Fenton said. “That really is a tipping point.”
Serra (2-1) never recovered.
“We didn’t play well,” Serra coach Scott Altenberg said. “I really haven’t felt like we’ve played well this year and I told them, we’re going to step up in competition.
“They (Los Alamitos) played great. We got a lot of things to work out. Like, we did not look good. We did not play well. We made a ton of mistakes. I told my guys, we are decent team that has to work really hard to be great. Right now, we’re working like we’re a great team, that … I don’t know.”
The road only gets tougher for Serra. Next week, the Cavaliers will face Orange Lutheran, a team they’re 0-4 against, followed by Oaks Christian, with the Mission League opener looming, after the bye, against Sierra Canyon (Oct. 3).
Los Alamitos scored on their opening possession on Kamden Tillis’ 2-yard run, capping a 65-yard, 10-play. Serra took the lead at 7-6 on Nicolas Johnson’s 12-yard run, but the Griffins turned in another long drive (69 yards, nine plays), ending with Colin Creason’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Beckham Hofland.
In the second quarter, Tillis made it 19-7 on a 1-yard run.
Serra added its second touchdown, on another touchdown run by Johnson (11 yards) to get within 19-14, but that’s when the disaster struck for the Cavaliers. After forcing Los Alamitos to punt, Serra looked to get decent field position with a chance to take a lead into halftime, but the punt skipped by Moutra, eventually ending in a safety.
Even with the two-touchdown lead at halftime, Fenton said he was a bit worried how the second half would go.
“We’re feeling great at halftime and I’m not sure how they felt, but to give up nine points in a matter of seconds, it’s difficult to overcome emotionally,” Fenton said. “That’s a very talented football team. They hadn’t given up a point this year, two shutouts, so we over here just worried, like here they come. Last year, they running clocked us, so any time you play a team that had a running clock on you the year before, no lead is safe.”
The end any chance of a comeback, Los Alamitos looked to its defense. Jackson Renger returned a fumbled 45 yards for a touchdown and a 35-14 lead. After an interception by Caeson Miller, Creason put the game firmly out of reach with a two-yard touchdown and a 41-14 lead.
“Offensively we’re young, so we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Altenberg said. “They took advantage of inexperience, we weren’t sure what we were trying to do. I give them all the credit in the world, they outplayed us, they were the better team. We’ve got to figure stuff out, that’s what we’ve got to do and if we don’t do that, it’s going to be a long year because it does get easier.”
