ReMind Magazine reported that the show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, offered an explanation for Tiger's disappearance in his 2010 book, Brady, Brady, Brady: The Complete Story of The Brady Bunch as Told by the Father/Son Team who Really Know. According to Schwartz, who died in 2011 at the age of 94, the original dog who played Tiger tragically died because a car hit him. Schwartz wrote that the dog's trainer did not inform the show's production about the animal's death and instead brought in a different dog that looked nearly identical to the original Tiger on set. Schwartz said, however, that the new Tiger didn't understand commands and the trainer eventually had to be honest about the situation.
Schwartz shared more details about Tiger's sad end during a 1997 interview with EMMYTVLEGENDS.ORG.
"It's a sad story. Tiger the dog left one day with his trainer and got away for a moment and was killed by a car," said Schwartz during the 1997 interview.
According to Schwartz, the trainer "didn't want to tell [production] that Tiger was killed" because he "was making a good living with Tiger" on the show.
"So he got another dog that looked exactly like Tiger," said the screenwriter.
Schwartz then said the particular scene called for Tiger "to lie on the floor." However, the new Tiger wouldn't stay lying down while cameras were rolling, as "he was untrained."
"We were wasting a lot of time and finally [the trainer] confessed, that's not really Tiger. It's another dog. Tiger got killed," recalled Schwartz.
The show's production chose to keep working with the untrained dog for the rest of the episode. Schwartz said in order to make sure the dog didn't move, they "nailed his collar down to the floor." Schwartz then said that Tiger didn't appear on the show's final three seasons because of the new dog's inability to listen to commands.
"That was the end of Tiger because we had an untrained dog. And we weren't going to deal with that," said the Gilligan's Island creator.
