Green Day is taking a story to the big screen.
On August 25, the popular rock band announced that they had created a movie, in collaboration with director Lee Kirk and Live Nation Productions. According to Variety, CAA Media Finance is handling sales for the film.
Titled New Years Rev, the comedy follows a garage band made up of three friends — played by Mason Thames, Kyler Coffman and Ryan Foust — who go on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles, believing they’ll be opening for Green Day. The twist? It’s all a prank.
According to Green Day, the movie will be packed with many of the band's most popular songs. Other stars include Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, McKenna Grace, Keen Ruffalo, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Sean Gunn. The band members of Green Day — Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt — will also appear and perform in the film.
In the trailer, the rock band borrows a taxi and hits the highway, encountering cute girls and rock music on their way to LA.
“Coming soon: @newyearsrevmovie. The story of three young punks willing to risk it all to chase their dream ??,” the official Green Day Instagram account captioned the post.

Green Day rose to fame in the early 1990s with their breakthrough album Dookie, which brought punk rock into mainstream society. Known for their high-energy performances and political lyrics, the band has released multiple chart-topping albums, including American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Over their decades-long career, Green Day has won numerous Grammy Awards, sold millions of records worldwide and still remains very influential in shaping today's punk and alternative rock music.
The band has been on their Saviors Tour since May 2024, playing their newest album Saviors and performing their hit albums Dookie and American Idiot in their entirety. The tour concludes later this month in San Bernardino.
New Years Rev is set to premiere next Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, though a theatrical release date has not yet been announced. Fans can watch the trailer on YouTube here.
