The Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese will miss her 11th game of the season on Friday night.
While Reese has suffered from her fair share of injury trouble this season, her absence for the Sky’s fifth and final regular-season matchup with the Fever comes for a different reason. Reese has been administered eight technical fouls throughout the 2025 campaign, meaning she has received an automatic one-game suspension per league rules.

The latest technical came during the Sky’s dominant win over the Connecticut Sun at Wintrust Arena. Aaliyah Edwards went to box out Reese for a potential rebound during the second quarter. After grabbing her position in front of Reese, the Sky forward swung her hand around and made contact with Edwards’ face.

“He said it was either going to be a tech or a flagrant, and I didn’t know how that is determined. He said it was too late to put it as a flagrant. Why didn’t you let us make that decision knowing that I have already seven technicals and I would have to sit the next game? So I think we’re gonna go back and talk to the league about it, but he said it was too late, so I don’t know.”
Head coach Tyler Marsh also sounded frustrated when asked how the situation was handled. He said the team would plan to contest the ruling in an effort to get the suspension removed. Nevertheless, Reese has been officially ruled out for Friday night’s game with her eighth technical.
“They told me it was an after-the-whistle deadfall foul that they had the choice to go with a technical or a flagrant. I ask them why not the flagrant, there was no real response given … That’s how that conversation went,” Marsh said.
Reese’s eight technicals do currently lead the WNBA. The Liberty’s Natasha Cloud is second on the list with six, while the Sun’s Bria Hartley and the Mystics Shakira Austin are tied for the third-most with five apiece.
Marsh also happens to have five of his own technicals this season, which leads all WNBA head coaches. The league as a whole has expressed a level of frustration in the officiating this season, but the Sky have undoubtedly been one of the more responsive groups in the moment.
Reese’s absence means that she will miss three of the Sky’s five matchups with the Fever this season. Overall, she faced off against rival Caitlin Clark only once this season, as Clark has dealt with her own injury trouble and recently announced she was out for the season.
Angel Reese will be eligible to return to the floor on Sunday night for the Sky’s first of two meetings with the Aces. Then, she will return home for a season finale against the reigning champion New York Liberty. After that, a long and important offseason awaits.
