If you arrived to a Ventura County FC game early enough, you could see Chris Rindov’s solo pregame walk-through.
Rindov, 23, goes to each penalty area and visualizes each possible scenario.
“I think I started it in my first year at (Sporting Kansas City),” Rindov said. “The beginning is visualizing on corners, the places I’m going to be and where I need to be clearing the ball, our positions and communicating and feeling the space. Then alongside that, on the ball, obviously here, it’s a big possession, so kind of getting the ball and visualizing me, getting the ball and turning, finding a lot of different options, keeping those options open and just getting through the flow of it.
“Then on the other side is the attacking, getting into the position of where I’m going to start on corner kicks, free kicks and attacking those and visualizing me scoring. It’s something that gets me locked in and ready. I get to the locker room, put my phone away and go outside, get the visualization, then go back in and it’s go time for the game, once we get activated there.”
He’s not done.
“Once I go back in, I actually do a Rubik’s Cube four times, just to kind of get focused. I’ve kind of always do that even through college (at Maryland). I’ve been a fan of it. I try to do it four times, the (motivation) song is like 3½ minutes and I try to do it four times, just kind of smooth and controlled, almost kind of like the (center back) position. It’s not something I’m trying to be fancy with get it done as just, just kind of get kind of the emotions of it.”
Rindov has taken his pregame rituals to the first team. He initially joined the Galaxy on a short-term loan from Ventura County. After making his first-team debut in a start against Colorado on Aug. 23 and two substitute appearances in Leagues Cup, the loan has been converted into a first-team contract through 2026, with club options for 2027 and 2028.
Rindov was a walk-on at Maryland and ended as a senior captain. He was a second-round pick by Sporting Kansas City in the 2023 MLS draft and made his MLS debut that year, but spent the majority of the season in games with the second team.
“I didn’t really get many chances the second year there,” Rindov said. “In the offseason, I talked with my agent to see what different options were available and that’s when Galaxy reached out. (Vice President, Soccer Operations) Gordon (Kljestan) reached out to my agent and said they were interested in me coming here on a second-team deal and see where he can go there. When I heard that, I felt like it was the perfect opportunity.”
Rindov started 21 games with Ventura County before making the move to the first team.
“We always have liked having that one veteran center back (at the second level), especially when we have young center backs that we’re trying to bring up next to him, a stabilizer, a leader,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “Chris is a top pro. Every day, without fail, he’s the first guy here and he’s in the weight room and he’s doing his routines and working out and he’s one of the last guys to leave.
“He’s investing in himself. I’ve seen him doing it, watching the second team all year and he’s just been a rock for that team and a leader.”
