Cox Charities is investing $100,000 in four San Diego-area nonprofits that are making a difference in the community.

Funded entirely by employee contributions, Cox Charities has supported California communities since 1996, according to a news release.

The 2025 nonprofit grant recipients in the San Diego region are:

    Supporting Military & Veterans :

Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank: The Military Initiative to Combat Hunger program targets food insecurity among San Diego’s military and veteran families, who face financial struggles due to high rents, inflation, and frequent relocations. Challenges like high spousal unemployment and childcare costs further strain their ability to afford necessities, including food. Veterans Transition Support: The “Military Transition Training Program” assists veterans and transitioning service members in transitioning to civilian life through job certification training, peer support, career management classes, and resource referrals. This specifically addresses the root causes of veteran unemployment, underemployment, homelessness, family disintegration, and suicide problems that are far too common.

    Supporting Conservation and Sustainability:

Tree San Diego: Tree San Diego’s Leafing Our Legacy program offers free tree distribution across San Diego County. This grant would supply 500 trees and materials directly to residents, promoting quicker planting. The initiative aims to beautify neighborhoods, sequester carbon, provide shade, clean the air, and reduce the urban heat island effect.

    Supporting K-12/STEM:

Living Coast Discovery Center: A grant from Cox Charities will help close STEAM educational gaps for Title I students by funding free field trips to the Living Coast Discovery Center. With Cox’s support, 640 students in grades K-12 will explore coastal habitats, wildlife, and ecosystems through hands-on science activities in one of San Diego’s rare tideland environments.

“Cox Charities grants enable our team members to give back to the communities we call home,” said Chanelle Hawken, San Diego Market vice president. “Made possible by voluntary employee contributions, these grants provide vital support to nonprofit organizations fostering positive change for our neighbors. We are proud to see our employees step up to donate and advise on where these investments are made.”
