Amanda Owens, Jennifer Sarchet and Samantha Van Abbema sell goods ranging from art and unique themed gift boxes to farmhouse decor. The LaSalle trio’s biggest sell, though, is community pride.
In late August, they hosted their Open Air Market at their building located at 100 Main St., LaSalle. The market is designed to allow local vendors to sell their goods as well as get foot traffic into the store, which Owens knows can be a tough task in a small community.
“It’s hard for small businesses in this economy,” Owens said. “LaSalle is kind of a pass-through town, so it gets people to truly stop and gives them a reason to stop and support small business.
Since July 2024, the trio has operated their individual businesses in the building on Main Street.
Owens, a LaSalle native, is the chief of everything at Daymaker Gifts. Her business specializes in creating unique themed gift boxes that are filled with products from local businesses. With every Open Air Market comes something different, Owens and Van Abbema said. They said new vendors appear, and sometimes the Roadside Wings truck feeds attendees.
Van Abbema, owner of Sam Cotie Creations, sells art, clothing and other accessories, in addition to teaching art.
Sarchet owns the Tattered Creek Farmhouse Boutique, selling farmhouse decor.
The trio hosts multiple events benefiting local businesses and the community. Van Abbema said they’ll host My Sister’s Closet from Sept. 12-13. The event has a selection of affordable homecoming and prom dresses for girls. It will take place again next spring before prom. The final Open Air market of the summer is set for Saturday, Sept. 27.
Owens said they also participate in vendor markets throughout the summer, Small Business Saturday in November and anywhere else they can. Owens said the trio is working on a large service project for October that is set to benefit children’s clinics and LaSalle schools. Owens supports the local 4-H and FFA groups.
“We are really and truly community and small business driven,” Van Abbema said. “So we have a lot going (on).”
