If that wasn’t already enough of a black eye for the program, reports began to surface on Friday morning that Belichick had banned scouts from his former NFL team, the New England Patriots, from attending games or practice.
This very odd ruling from the Tar Heels’ head man naturally drew a ton of criticism from both fans and analysts alike, and ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky in particular didn’t hold back when discussing the reports on Friday’s episode of First Take.
“I want to be respectful here. I think this is stupid, and I think it’s wrong,” Orlovsky said. “One, you’re hurting your players. If I’m a kid there, I want to have a chance to go to the NFL. Part of the process is you coming to evaluate me. Part of the process is you coming to see me at practice… I think most high school football players that are really good want to go play in the SEC, specifically if you’re down in that part of the country. They want to go play in the SEC, and they want to go to the NFL.”
Orlovsky raises a number of very good points. If the decision ultimately costs the Tar Heels recruits and players, it will also be seen as blatant coaching malpractice.
As such, it will be interesting to see how this whole saga continues to unfold and what the response from both current players and recruits ends up being as a result.
