Formed on Netflix's Building the Band — alongside 3QUENCY, SZN4, Iconyx (formerly Soulidified), Sweet Seduction and Siren Society — it's safe to say that Midnight 'Til Morning has been hard at work ever since the show came to a close.
Consisting of Conor Smith, Mason Watts, Shane Appell and Zach Newbould, the band has released two songs called “Bye” and “Ghost Of Us" since Building the Band's inaugural season wrapped — with another song called "Navy Eyes" on the way — as well as announced live shows in the United States, Canada and Australia.
Although Midnight 'Til Morning has clearly been booked and busy as of late, the boys are certainly unafraid to take a trip down memory lane...
Now that Building the Band is available for the public to stream at their leisure, the men of Midnight 'Til Morning have been spilling some major tea, sharing exclusively with Parade what really happened during the reality television series.

How Midnight ‘Til Morning Came to Be

(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic)For those who need a refresher, the chemistry between Conor, Mason, Shane and Zach was almost instantaneous on Building the Band, with Midnight 'Til Morning seemingly forming itself after just a few cheeky conversations.
In our exclusive interview, Mason confirmed that what we saw on the show was accurate, admitting that he knew "pretty much straight away" that he had found his forever bandmates.
"These were my top three picks, so I was pretty happy to end up in a group with all three of them, obviously," he gushed, prior to delving into the details. "As soon as we started talking, there was genuinely an instant connection."
Mason recalled, "I remember the first time the four of us spoke in the booth, they didn't include this on the show, but I looked at the camera and was like, 'That's definitely my group. I don't need to talk with anyone else,' and they're like, 'Oh, are you sure? We're gonna try you with some other people, you know, it's still very on early on in the process,' and I was like, 'No, no, no, you don't have to do that. This is my group.'"
The concluded with a chuckle, "They did put me with other people anyway, but I was like, 'This is a waste of time. I already know what I'm doing.'"
To follow Mason's oh-so sweet story, Conor concurred, agreeing with everything his bandmate had to say, simultaneously adding that the chemistry between them was "pretty instant."

On Building the Band, fans saw quite a bit of drama unfold between the members of Midnight 'Til Morning — primarily regarding Conor, as his relationship with Sweet Seduction member Allison Ogden interfered with the band — but believe it or not, Conor, Mason, Shane and Zach are actually the best of friends.
In the same interview, Conor shared one of his favorite memories from filming that didn't make it into the show, which was "a little adventure day" consisting of some skateboarding, truly demonstrating the camaraderie between the boys.
"We went to a skate park," he spilled, sharing that he and Shane went skateboarding, while Mason and Zach — who "weren't legally allowed to" — watched from afar.
"Shane took a slam," Conor added — getting a laugh out of his bandmates — describing the entire "adventure day" as "sick."
Working With Liam Payne

While skateboarding was certainly fun, filming for Building the Band was filled with some moving moments as well. With the show being One Direction member Liam Payne's final project before his unexpected passing, it's safe to say that his kindness and advice left quite an impression on the men of Midnight 'Til Morning.
On Building the Band, Mason had a conversation with Payne onstage, where recalled sitting in the front row of a One Direction show at Madison Square Garden — which is when he first knew that he wanted to be in a boy band — but since then, Conor, Shane and Zach have shared how much Payne, and One Direction as a whole, meant to them as well.

On the 15 year anniversary of One Direction’s formation (July 23), the group covered “Night Changes” in a heartfelt Instagram reel.
“Today marks the 15 year anniversary of One Direction. During Building the Band, @liampayne was a huge inspiration and was so willing to help us on our journey. We wanted to share something with you to celebrate him and @onedirection ?,” Midnight 'Til Morning captioned the post.

In another Instagram reel shared last week, the foursome covered one of Payne’s solo songs, “Midnights,” captioning the post something oh-so simple, yet something that made us shed a tear: “Miss you @liampayne ?”
In our exclusive interview, Conor reflected on the band's experience working with Payne, sharing what he remembers about the late One Direction member.
"I think the one thing that a lot of people should realize is that, that Liam wasn't one of those people who said things for a camera," he gushed, prior to delving into the details. "You see a lot of these shows, and in your mind, you're like, 'They're definitely just saying that for the camera. They're being nice for the camera.' Liam was the exact same off-camera as he was on-camera."
Conor continued, passionately, "He was giving us advice off-camera. Real advice about the business of the industry, and just about the brotherhood of it all and how to have fun and really take it all in."
"That's one thing that I remember about him is that he wasn't this person with an ego, and he didn't think he was better than anyone else... He genuinely helped us off-camera, which meant a lot to us. It wasn't some facade he was putting on. It was real. I think that that meant a lot to us. It meant heaps," the Aussie concluded.
With Payne's advice in the back of their minds, the future is bright for Midnight 'Til Morning. To stay up-to-date with their new tunes, tour dates and more, you may connect with the band via Instagram and TikTok.
