Happy Friday from your friends at BN Bears!
I wonder what the NFL scriptwriters have in store for the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football when opening night featured a Jalen Carter ejection for spitting, a brouhaha 10 minutes into the game, a George Pickens unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and a lightning delay. Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter is a tremendous player. But I can’t imagine the hijinks that would have ensued had he landed on the Bears in 2023. Knowing what we know about how far Matt Eberflus’ finger was from the pulse of his teams, you don’t really want to think about how Carter would have developed under the previous regime, because I have thought about it, and it isn’t pretty. Every time I saw Matt Eberflus’ face on the TV, I thought about how much I would enjoy Ben Johnson’s offense putting a 40burger on the Dallas defense in Week 3. That lightning delay mucked things up on the field and for our general football watching. It was the kind of thing that made me think that a fixed-roof stadium would actually be a good thing for the Bears (and other NFL teams that don’t have one just yet). Let the record show that I am all for new stadium construction, but only so long as taxpayers don’t get stuck footing the bill. After all, billionare owners should be able to afford new buildings. The NFL action continues with the Chargers and Chiefs playing a game on a Friday night in Brazil on YouTube. I can’t believe that is a sentence I just typed out. Imagine telling a version of yourself from 10 years ago that we are going to watch an NFL game on YouTube tonight. What is that conversation even like? ICYMI: The first injury report of Bears-Vikings week is out. A pair of Bears starting defenders (linebacker T.J. Edwards, cornerback Jaylon Johnson) are on the list. For what it’s worth, the team will practice on Friday and will share an updated injury report later today. In the meantime, I’ll be trying new ways to control my anxiety while thinking about how the team’s top tackling linebacker and a two-time Pro Bowl corner might not be available for the MNF showdown. Those would be huge blows to Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen’s unit. CHICAGO, IL – OCTOBER 22: Linebacker T.J. (Photo by Todd Rosenberg/Getty Images) Are you looking for some Bears-related optimism? Of course, you are. Perhaps you will find yourself feeling better about the team going into the 2025 NFL season after reading that three of the five experts polled by the Sun-Times have Chicago’s football team finishing with a winning record this season. More optimism to come later today. Over at Marquee, Nicholas Moreano rounds up opinions from national media folks who share how they believe the Bears will fare in 2025. If you’re going to Soldier Field on Monday (or at any point this season), there are new food items on the menu. The Tribune has a unique look at the showcased food offerings at the football home of the Bears. Ballpark food has advanced so much over the years. While I was at Coors Field last week, I had a baked potato with beef brisket that was absolutely delightful. Don’t get it twisted. I still love a ballpark dog. But sometimes, you just need something ridiculous to tie your stadium experience together. The NFL putting commercials in RedZone, a product people paid to watch commercial-free for years, was unnecessary. But the league did it anyway. I’m glad that the folks at Awful Announcing are riding for football fans and consumers with this piece on the latest from the NFL’s thirst for infinite profits.HAPPY FRIDAY FROM BLEACHER NATION BEARS: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
