Cubs Prospects Report | September 5, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Jameson Taillon was on the mound in Iowa for a rehab start on Thursday. It wasn’t the most inspiring outing, but rehab starts aren’t always that way, as pitchers are usually just trying to work on different things and get comfortable. Taillon allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in 3.2 innings of work. He also struck out six hitters. He exited with Iowa trailing 3-0.

The Cubs struck right back after Taillon’s exit. In the bottom of the fourth, Iowa tied the ball game with a three-run frame. They got a pair of run-scoring walks to get the score to 3-2, then Chase Strumpf evened things up with an RBI single.

The 3-3 score held up until the bottom of the seventh when Iowa jumped out front for the first time in the matchup. With the bases loaded, Carlos Pérez was plunked by a pitch to give the Cubs a 4-3 advantage, and they’d hold onto that lead and take the win by that score.

    Notable Performances

    Jonathan Long | 2-3, R, 2B, BB Chase Strumpf | 1-4, RBI Jameson Taillon | 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 6 K, BB

FINAL: Cubs 4, Storm Chasers 3 | Box Score

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

Knoxville won 3-0 in the Pedro Ramirez show over the Trash Pandas on Thursday. Ramirez had an amazing day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Not bad! Knoxville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a Ramirez RBI double. They increased the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a Jordan Nwogu RBI single, then added their final run in the seventh on an Ethan Hearn bases-loaded walk.

On the mound, Connor Schultz was brilliant, tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, struck out eight, and walked only two batters.

    Notable Performances

    Pedro Ramirez | 5-5, 2 R, RBI, 3 2B Connor Schultz | 7.0 IP, H, 0 ER, 8 K, 2 BB Jordan Nwogu | 2-4, RBI

FINAL: Smokies 3, Trash Pandas 0 | Box Score

    High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend won both of its games on Thursday! Their game with Wisconsin was suspended due to weather on Wednesday, with the Cubs trailing 2-1 in the fourth. In the sixth inning, South Bend evened that game when Ariel Armas reached on an error, which allowed a run to score. Then Kade Snell brought in the go-ahead run with an RBI single. After Wisconsin tied the game in the seventh, Brian Kalmer gave the Cubs the lead again with a two-run homer in the eighth, making it 5-3, which held up as the final score.

FINAL: Cubs 5, Timber Rattlers 3 | Box Score

In the second game, the Cubs got out to a fast start and never looked back. South Bend picked up three runs in the first on an Edgar Alvarez RBI double, a Brian Kalmer sac fly, and a Drew Bowser RBI single. Wisconsin scored a run in the second, then the Cubs scored on a Timber Rattlers’ error in the third and an Ariel Armas two-run double in the fourth, making it 6-2. The two teams traded runs in the sixth, and Wisconsin scored one in the seventh, but the Cubs earned a 7-4 win and a pair of victories on the day.

    Notable Performances

    Ariel Armas (Gm. 1) | 3-4, R, SB Brian Kalmer (Gm. 1) | 1-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SB Ariel Armas (Gm. 2) | 2-3, R, 2 RBI, BB, SB

FINAL: Cubs 7, Timber Rattlers 4 | Box Score

    Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans dropped a tight one, 4-3, on Thursday night. After a scoreless first two innings, Columbia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Pelicans answered back with three runs in the bottom half on RBI singles from Alexey Lumpuy and Angel Cepeda, and a sac fly from Matt Halbach. Unfortunately, that’s where the scoring stopped for Myrtle Beach. Columbia tied the game up in the sixth and then grabbed the lead in the ninth, and ultimately won the game 4-3.

    Notable Performances

    Angel Cepeda | 2-3, RBI, BB, 2 SB Alexey Lumpuy | 1-4, R, RBI, BB, 2 SB Jose Escobar | 1-4, R, BB

FINAL: Fireflies 4, Pelicans 3 | Box Score
