The Nationals come to town this weekend for a three-gamer at Wrigley Field, and it’s perhaps the easiest series remaining on the schedule. Gotta take two of three, at a minimum …
We’ll find out quite soon whether Kyle Tucker’s calf tightness was indeed only that, or whether it’s something a bit more. If he’s unable to play this afternoon, the Cubs might be wise to just give him an IL stint – it could be backdated three days, and he’d have to be out just a week. At this point in the season, given the most likely outcome for the Cubs (top Wild Card spot), it seems like it could be worth giving Tucker a rest if he’s not 100%. That said, it’s possible that he gets another day or two on the thinking that’s all he will need. It’d be a risk – you can only backdate up to three days maximum – but the trade-off would be not losing him for an entire additional week. We’ll see. A really nice profile here at the Tribune on Caleb Thielbar, a veteran lefty who has seen some stuff in his career. Now 38, Thielbar has kept on tweaking his game and is one of the most successful relievers in baseball this season. His 1.99 ERA is 11th best in baseball, and leads the Cubs’ relief corps. And it’s not just the results, either – Statcast suggests the dude is just really good: Caleb Thielbar also threw my single favorite pitch of the entire season so far. He probably hasn’t been the most critical Cubs reliever so far this year – Brad Keller and Daniel Palencia have generally pitched more key innings – but the Cubs would’ve definitely lost some games without him. Great signing. Early playoff rotation rankings (top three) would have the Cubs 10th out of 12 teams here at The Athletic. I won’t fight it too much, because it seems to me there’s a huge clustering in the 4 to 10 range, but I do think the key could be getting Matthew Boyd back on track. If, by the postseason, he’s the guy he was in the first half? And if Shōta Imanaga and Cade Horton keep pitching as they have been? That’s just a killer front three. … so maybe let’s go ahead and figure out a way to give some other guys spot starts to buy extra rest for Boyd (and Horton and Imanaga). Woof.
