The Conjuring franchise has delivered some serious scares since its 2013 inception, and it was hella (ahem) lucrative: So far the films have made a cool $2.3 billion at the box office, and the latest installment is only going to send that number soaring even higher. The Conjuring 4: Last Rites has promised to be "the case that ended it all" for Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), a real-life (if self-proclaimed) demonologist and psychic couple.
The Conjuring: Last Rites centers on the Warrens' work to exorcise a demon that tortured the Smurl family, another real-life brood based in Pennsylvania.

"As the sun sets on the Conjuring franchise… I am overwhelmed," he wrote alongside a photo of trailers on the set. "There aren't enough thanks to go around for the thousands of people who've contributed to the making of these films… and the millions who've watched them. ❤️@verafarmiga … what to say? What is Conjuring: Last Rites based on?
The Conjuring 4: Last Rites is at least somewhat based on the Smurl haunting, a real-life case the Warrens handled in 1986. The Smurls were a normal, blue collar family living a normal life in Pennsylvania until a demon terrorized them in their home, with particularly harrowing activity targeted at parents Janet and Jack Smurl.
Producer Peter Safran told Entertainment Weekly that the Smurl case was one "percolating" for a long time in The Conjuring creators' minds because it's one that's "Googleable."

Will The Conjuring: Last Rites be the final movie?
A demon in "The Conjuring 4: Last Rites"Warner Bros.
According to James Wan, who launched the franchise in 2013, the answer is ... probably, at least for a while.
"I just think collectively we've been doing this for a while. It's been nearly 13 years that we've been playing in this world," he explained to Collider. "We all felt like we don't want to be making the 30th movie down the line and have driven the franchise into the ground. We love the idea of actually just going out on a high, whilst we're still on top. There's something kind of nice about it, to kind of not soil the legacy, if you will. It just felt like—I don't know, the right thing to do. Maybe just take a long break from it, and who knows? You never know what could happen down the line. But for now, it's a bittersweet farewell."
That said, Wilson confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that even if it isn't the very last movie in The Conjuring universe, it would be the last in which he starred.
"There's only so many times you can say, 'This is the worst case we've ever had!'" he joked, later adding, "Ed got pretty beat up in the third one, so I honestly didn't want to be on death's door for this movie."
Farmiga concurred, joking that her rosary beads broke and she took it as a sign to close this chapter.
Wan further explained of their characters, "The beating heart of this franchise is Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson playing Ed and Lorraine. The family dynamic, the faith the characters have, and the faith that they have in each other are really the things that drive this particular franchise. I do think that's what people love about it. At least for me and Peter Safran, it's really about finding a way to tell the stories of these characters and to wrap them up in a way that feels respectful to where we started with them."
Giving hope to fans? New Line Cinema president Richard Brener told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2025 that The Conjuring: Last Rites was "testing through the roof," adding, "While this is the last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more." When asked what the next phase may entail, he replied, "Phase two is TBD."

What will The Conjuring 4: Last Rites be about?
The Conjuring: Last Rites is a dramatized portrayal of a haunting (or, as the Warrens dubbed it, a "demonic infestation") of the Smurl family. The film takes place in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The Smurl case was the last that Lorraine and Ed Warren tackled together.

Is Conjuring 4 based on a true story?
Loosely, yes—though the veracity of the story depends on who you ask about it.
The Smurls have maintained that their demonic infestation was real, while skeptics have pointed to various factors, including to a previous brain surgery that patriarch Jack Smurl had, in an efforts to debunk the haunting.
That said, Wilson hinted that the movie makes pretty liberal use of creative license in telling the Smurls' story from the Warrens' point of view.
"We've known about this one for a long time," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Then writers are playing around with how it affects the family and what's going on in the family's life. That's where we can really theatricalize it. We're not making a documentary."

Allegedly yes! Variety reported in April 2023 that a Conjuring TV series was in the works at HBO Max, though it's unclear how far in development it's gotten so far. At the time, the series was slated to follow the events of the film series, though it's unclear if those plans are still in place since Wilson's Ed and Farmiga's Lorraine are hanging up their crucifixes after The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Warning: Potential spoilers ahead for The Conjuring: Last Rites and prior Conjuring films!
While Valak (a.k.a. The Nun!) was, at one point, the most powerful demon the Warrens had encountered, he's not the villain in The Conjuring 4—but you can expect plenty of callbacks to previous installments, including the demonic doll from Annabelle.
