ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new school year is underway in the Rochester area. News10NBC TODAY has been live from a different school across the region each day this week. On Friday, we spoke with leaders at McQuiad Jesuit as they gear up for the second day of classes. You can see a list of when each school returned this week here.
McQuaid, an all-boys Catholic school for grades sixth through 12th, has some new academic initiatives this year. High school principal John Serafine said a partnership with the Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship is right around the corner. He also said there are some new Advanced Placement classes and a wellness seminar for freshmen that focuses on mental and physical health. Serafine said he loved welcoming new and returning faces on Thursday for the start of their journey into a new school year.
“We have a school of great young men. We ask a lot of them, both in the classroom and in the community. They always seem to step up and impress me. I’m really proud of the tradition that we have here and the commitment to our mission,” he said.
Starting this school year, smartphones, smartwatches, personal headphones, tablets, personal laptops, and gaming devices will be banned from public schools across the state. Even though McQuaid is a private school, it’s still complying with the cell phone ban.
“It was our first day with our cell phone ban, so that was a little bit interesting. So it went very well, very smoothly. I think our kids here, their intent is serious and committed to having a good year,” Serafine said.
The middle school also had its first day on Thursday, welcoming 120 new students from dozens of different districts. Middle school principal Janet Dacey said the first day went well and now it’s all about building a community.
“We work on building community and how these guys are going to work together to be the best that they can be here with us,” she said.
Dacey hopes that students will continue to grow throughout their journey at McQuaid and let their unique talents shine.
“Just to grow into who they are meant to be. We want them each to develop their own individual talents for their purpose and trying to get them to figure out what those are and help them make the best of them. That’s our goal every year,” Dacey said.
