ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A new bill could ban paper mail in New York prisons.
State Sen. Dan Stec wants all legal mail sent electronically and viewed on tablets. He says paper letters have been used to smuggle synthetic drugs into facilities.
Back in May, a Poughkeepsie woman was arrested after being accused of sending mail soaked in drugs to multiple state prison inmates.

Under the proposal, law firms would register with the state and email inmates through a secure portal. The goal is to reduce contraband and boost security, Stec says. He also says tablets are already in use and taxpayer-funded.
