DENVER (KDVR) -- A student at East High School was found with a gun after another student reported concerns on Thursday morning.
An email from the school principal, Terita Walker, to parents said that the school received a report that a student had a gun on the school property.
The principal said a student had shared their concern with a trusted adult, allowing officers from the Denver Public Schools Department of Climate and Safety and the Denver Police Department to act.
DPS officers entered the classroom to escort the student into a private space. The principal said he resisted and "was placed in handcuffs for the safety of everyone involved," and a gun was later found in his bag.
"I would like to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We take all threats seriously and members of law enforcement investigate each instance. In order to maintain a safe environment, it is critical that students feel comfortable reporting to the appropriate adults if they hear about or see a weapon on our campus. That is what happened in this situation," the principal said in the letter.
Members of the DPS Crisis Team were available to help any students struggling after what occurred, and the principal invited parents to reach out to the school psychologist or counselor with any mental health concerns or questions.
The principal included a reminder for students that it is never "never OK to bring weapons of any kind – real or fake – onto school property."
