The Junior League of San Diego is taking action against food insecurity this year, completing three of four major projects in its 2025 Community Improvement Program to deliver fresh food and practical support directly to families across the county.

Big things are ahead as the organization plans to launch its final initiative this fall. In total, JLSD is investing more than $12,000 in this year’s efforts, along with volunteer time and organizational support to ensure lasting community impact.

In line with its multi-year focus on food insecurity, JLSD selected the following projects to provide both immediate relief and long-term support for families:

San Diego Food Bank’s Client Choice Pantry Produce Displays (completed) – JLSD funded two new produce displays to improve volunteer efficiency and give local families a dignified way to select fresh fruits, vegetables, and other essentials. During a volunteer shift, JLSD members bagged 971 pounds of pears and 853 pounds of zucchini, which will be arranged in the new displays and distributed through the Food Bank’s Client Choice Pantry program. Coastal Roots Farm’s Planting Project (completed) – JLSD provided funding and volunteers to plant ground cover crops and coffee trees in the Farm’s Agroforestry Fruit Tree Berms, supporting sustainable food production and delivering fresh, healthy food to families facing food insecurity. PATH’s 4th of July Feast for Friends Hot Lunch Program (completed) – JLSD helped provide a patriotic sit-down meal experience for residents at interim shelters, fostering community, joy, and a sense of belonging while supporting individuals experiencing food insecurity. Interfaith Community Services’ Cooking Class Program (Fall 2025) – JLSD will host hands-on cooking demonstrations for participants in one of Interfaith’s specialized programs, equipping clients with skills to prepare quick, healthy, and budget-friendly meals. Participants will leave with the materials and knowledge needed to continue providing healthy meals for their families.

“I’ve always been passionate about volunteering and giving back, so I was thrilled to lead JLSD’s Community Council team over the last year,” said Nicole Lichtenwalner, Junior League of San Diego vice president of Community Action Council 2024-2025. “It is incredibly rewarding to see JLSD leave a lasting, positive mark on San Diego communities and to witness the tangible outcomes of our collective service. The feedback we have received from our members and community partners has been inspiring, and we look forward to expanding our CIP projects in the years ahead.”
