The Left Side of the Cubs’ Infield Has Been Showing Out

Anyone else noticed the uptick in highlight plays from Dansby Swanson lately? A lot of that is just circumstantial – the right plays have to be available to be made in the first place – but I wonder if he’s also just feeling really good physically right now.

We’ve seen a bunch of great plays lately from Swanson, including this diving stab last night:

Looking like a receiver in the end zone, eh? (Had to get in my football plug with the NFL season kicking off and the big BN Fantasy promo available today!)

We know Dansby Swanson is a great defender, and that isn’t going to be in question even if the highlight reel plays had remained elusive. I’m just saying, it’s been nice – and fun – to see an uptick lately. Swanson also just passed last year’s DRS total (+8 in 2025, +7 in 2024), though the Statcast-related metrics have him as only slightly above-average defensively this year. Not sure why there’s such a significant disconnect, as I haven’t really noticed Swanson looking, overall, like he’s lost a step from last year (though I suppose he’s up to 10 errors from just 5 last year).

Meanwhile, Matt Shaw continues to shine defensively at third base, continue to bust out highlight after highlight of his own.

Example? This ridiculous play last night:

Ke’Bryan Hayes is lapping the field defensively this year at third base, so the Gold Glove is already sewn up in that respect. But that doesn’t mean Shaw hasn’t emerged as a true plus defender at third base in his first year sticking at the position (all while adjusting to hitting in the big leagues as a rookie!). He’s up to a +11 in DRS, though, as with Swanson, the Statcast-fueled metrics have him as slightly below average. Something funky has to be going on with their left side inputs, right?

Pretty nice to have these guys playing next to each other right now. Premium defensive left side of the infield.
