Family Ties Star Needs Your Help: From One Cancer Survivor to Another

Actor Michael Gross, 78, starred as one of TV's beloved sitcom dads for seven years on the Emmy-winning NBC show Family Ties, and now he is asking for fans' help for a dear friend of his who is battling cancer for the third time.

“Cancer is a bitch. I don’t usually reach out in this way…” — Michael Gross

"Cancer is a bitch. I don't usually reach out in this way, but someone I know could use a helping hand, so if you can spare a few dollars, she could use it. From one cancer survivor to another, I am in Jennifer's corner. Love and blessings. Please go to her #gofundme page," writes the actor on an Instagram post featuring a photo of his friend Jennifer.

On the GoFundMe page, it details how Jennifer is "fighting oral cancer for the third time," and this time around, it is significantly more serious.

"This time, the cancer has become more aggressive and is now dangerously close to her epiglottis. If it reaches that point, Jennifer would be forced to live with a permanent feeding tube and trach — something we are desperately hoping to avoid," the fundraiser says.

But there is a "glimmer of hope." This week, Jennifer was accepted into a clinical trial in Los Angeles that could "change everything by shrinking the tumor and giving her the chance to live a full life with her family. We are beyond grateful for this opportunity, but it comes with immense challenges."

However, Jennifer and her family live in North Carolina. The plan is for Jennifer to live in Los Angeles with her two boys, Easton, 10, and Ives, 6, while her husband flies back and forth. The clinical trial could take as long as seven months, so the expense will be considerable.

Jennifer is hoping to be able to "focus on her health and cherish every moment with her boys and her husband during this fight," so "any contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference."

On the Instagram post, Gross' fans are thanking him for sharing, with several writing "God bless you" to the fellow cancer survivor.

In 2012, Gross was diagnosed with prostate cancer. But not only that, in the same year, his wife Elza Bergeron had a cancer scare and his daughter Katharine endured complications from surgery, plus his father and his mother-in-law both passed away.

“People kept dying. Friends kept dying,” Gross told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013. He also shared that eight days after his cancer surgery, he was on the set of a new film, but that was OK because he needed "an adventure" at that point to alleviate how hard the previous year had been.

The GoFundMe for Jennifer is looking to raise $9000, and as of this writing, it is 64% of the way there.
