“Let’s glow” is this year’s theme for School No. 45

Students who arrive at School No. 45 will be greeted by balloons, streamers, a photo booth, and smiles from Principal Christine Manuele-Turnquist. The principal says it’s all in honor of this year’s theme, “Let’s glow: Shining bright in all we do.”

Live at School No. 45 at 6 a.m.Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

The theme celebrates the way students make those around them shine. Manuele-Turnquist, an employee with the district since 2001, said she keeps coming back every year because she loves watching children grow as they learn.

“We want to help students see their own thing that makes them glow on the inside that shines outward for everyone else to see, whether that be through their academics, their leadership, or their friendships and their interactions with the community,” she said.

The district has been undergoing some changes recently, including a new interim superintendent, Dr. Demario Strickland, who began his role in July. Manuele-Turnquist spoke about adapting to the changes.

“We have had a lot of changes and it’s been good change. There’s been a lot of transparency and a lot of clarity on where the district is heading and I think to be able to be a part of that at this building level. That’s really exciting for us,” she said.

    Aiming to improve education outcomes

With a new school year comes new initiatives to improve education outcomes. Rhonda Morien, chief of schools at RCSD, spoke about how the district aims to improve education, from decisions by the school board all the way down to the classroom.

Live at School No. 45 at 6:30 a.m.Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

One initiative, Strive for Five, aims to increase student attendance by engaging families, building trust, and identifying any barriers stopping students from attending.

“This year we’re really focusing on taking the initiatives we have and aligning them to a strategic plan with a focus on student outcomes from the school board all the way down,” Morien said. “…We have some curriculum initiatives, but really this year is about fine-tuning what we already have and aligning it to the right work and making sure everybody’s on the same page.”

Initiatives to improve education didn’t stop over the summer. Two Rochester City Council members partnered with Primetime585 and the New York City-based Read Alliance over the summer to bring a reading camp to Rochester. According to the most recent state data, fewer than 15% of third graders in RCSD are reading at grade level and only 21% of eighth graders are considered proficient readers.
