Guitarist Steve Jones, 70, has broken his wrist in a freak accident, making it impossible for him to play.

The band Sex Pistols revealed the shock news in a statement to fans on Instagram.

In a joint statement, they wrote: “We have some unfortunate news to share about our upcoming North and South American performances. We’ll let Steve explain what’s going on:

“I’ve got some good news and bad news. What do you want first?

“Okay, the bad news: I’ve broken my wrist, so unfortunately we won’t be doing any shows for a while.

“The good news is the surgeon said I will be back playing guitar in the not-too-distant future. The other good news is I’ll be 70 tomorrow! God bless, and God save the wrist.”

Fans all over the world flooded the comment section to share their devastation over the cancelled shows and excitement to see them when the guitar player is fully recovered.

One wrote: “I’m very sad about the cancellation of the show in Brazil. I hope you get better soon.”

Another added: “I hope all goes well for you and you heal properly. I’ll see you in Philadelphia when you’re all healed.”

A third penned: “Oh no! Hope you’re healing and playing again soon.”

Steve – who was set to hit the road with bandmates Paul Cook, Glen Matlock and frontman Frank Carter – was meant to kick off the US leg in Dallas on September 16.

Fans were gearing up to hear the group belt out their iconic 1977 album in full, but the shows will now be pushed back until the 70-year-old rocker is back on his feet.

They told fans to keep an eye on venue websites for updates, adding: “We appreciate your understanding and support.”

The US dates were set to follow a smash-hit UK run last September, with Frank Carter stepping in on vocals after John Lydon refused to return.

Lydon – once known as Johnny Rotten – has been locked in a bitter feud with his old bandmates for years.

Speaking on the Rockonteurs podcast last year, Steve admitted he hasn’t spoken to the 69-year-old in over a decade.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” he said.

“2008 was the last time. We did 30 shows around Europe, festivals, Japan, Australia, and ended at Hammersmith Apollo.

“Then we had one more in the Basque country and that was it. I was done after that – too much, too old, not enough fun.”

Meanwhile, Lydon has blasted the group for reforming without him, branding their comeback a “karaoke tour” as he continues performing with Public Image Ltd.

When asked if a reunion would ever happen, he fumed: “No, I made that clear a long time ago. They’re impossible, heart-turgid, difficult to deal with, and have very bad natures.

“I think going out and doing this is extremely poor taste. If you don’t want me around, that’s fine – get your stand-up comedian in my place.

“But leave my words out of it, because it’s clear you don’t understand them.”
