Northern Ireland haven’t qualified for a World Cup finals since 1986. On Thursday they will get their latest campaign underway when they take on Luxembourg away in their opening Group A qualifier.
With just two goals in their last four matches, Luxembourg will be under pressure. On the flip side, the Irish will be looking to build on some promising recent results and get their campaign started with a win.

Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland predictions
The legendary Billy Bingham led Northern Ireland to successive World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986. The Irish also qualified for Euro 2016, but that aside, it has been a bleak period for the Green and White Army over the past four decades.
Michael O’Neill was the manager who led the Irish to Euro 2016. After an unsuccessful three year spell at Stoke, O’Neill returned to take charge of the national team in 2022, but he couldn’t lead the team to their second Euros in 2024.
The 56-year-old now has the chance to create history. If he can lead Northern Ireland to the World Cup, he will be the first head coach to secure qualification for both major championships for the minnows.
But unlike in the qualification process for Euro 2024, O’Neill now has a squad that is competitive and could make a push for the playoffs.
Northern Ireland finished top of Nations League C Group 3. They secured promotion with 11 points from six matches – Luxembourg finished bottom of the same group with just three points.
The Irish have played four friendlies since the end of the Nations League. They started with a credible 1-1 draw at home to Switzerland in March, but were thrashed 5-1 by Sweden four days later on the road.
The Irish then lost 2-1 to Denmark in Copenhagen in the first of their two June friendlies. That was followed by a 1-0 win over Iceland at Windsor Park three days later.
Hosts Luxembourg are on a poor run of form. The Red Lions are three matches without a win and have only won one of their previous 12.
More worryingly for Jeff Strasser’s team is they have only scored one goal in their last three matches.
A disappointing Nations League campaign saw the Red Lions register three draws and three defeats. They bounced back well from that with a 1-0 win over Sweden in a March friendly. However, things have gone downhill since.
Luxembourg lost 3-1 to Switzerland just three days later. Their solitary goal came from a Danel Sinani spot kick after 89 minutes when the match was already over.
The Red Lions started their June friendlies with a 1-0 home defeat to Slovenia. That was followed by a 0-0 home draw with the Republic of Ireland four days later.
There were some positives with the hosts having the better of the match. Luxembourg had 58 percent possession and 12 shots to Ireland’s seven.
However, given the overall form of both sides, qualifying for the World Cup from a group that also contains Germany and Slovakia looks set to be an uphill task
Germany are the favourites to top the group at 3/20 with Tote. Slovakia are second at 13/2, with Michael O’Neill’s team third at 10/1. Luxembourg are the 40/1 outsiders.

The teams met twice in the recent Nations League with Northern Ireland having the better of the exchanges. Michael O’Neill’s team won the Matchday 1 showdown 2-0 at Windsor Park. The honours were shared in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the return match. Our Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland match betting tips follow:
O’Neill’s men set to maintain good record against the Red Lions
Luxembourg have only defeated Northern Ireland once in their history. We have to go all the way back to 2013 for the Red Lions’ 3-2 win over the Irish in a World Cup qualifier.
Since then, the Green and White Army have dominated with three wins and a draw.
So if Northern Ireland are serious about qualifying for the World Cup, albeit through the playoffs, they simply have to win this match.
However, a look at the statistics from Luxembourg’s recent matches suggests they have enough about them to cause the Irish problems. The Red Lions had 54 percent of the ball in their 2-2 draw with the Northern Irish, and 64 percent in their 2-0 loss.
More recently, Luxembourg had a competitive 58 percent possession in their last match against the Republic or Ireland.
As a result, we can see this being a close game. Therefore, we are backing Northern Ireland to win or draw and no in both teams to score. This covers a 1-0 win for the Irish and a 0-0 draw.

History tells us there won’t be many cards
The two Nations League matches between Luxembourg and Northern Ireland were relatively quiet affairs without much need for the referee to get overly involved on either occasion.
Northern Ireland won the opening match with just two yellow cards awarded. The honours were even in the return fixture, this time with just three bookings.
Over 4.5 bookings is the favourite in the bookings market at 7/10. Under 4.5 is almost even money, and given how the last two matches played out, this looks like the better value wager.

Isaac Price to continue good early season form
Isaac Price has started the new season in impressive form with three goals and one assist for West Brom in the Championship.
The attacking midfielder is 10/3 to score anytime and is 2/1 to score or assist. In a match that might not see many goals, we are playing a bit safer, and backing Price to try his luck and have two or more shots on target.
