The NFL season is here, as the Dallas Cowboys travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night to kick off the season.
The Eagles will be hoisting the franchise’s second Super Bowl banner into the air, as the two NFC East rivals begin the year with a bang.
This won’t be the first time the two storied franchises begin the year facing one another. Almost 25 years ago to the date, on September 3, 2000, the Cowboys and Eagles played in what became known as ‘The Pickle Juice Game’ in Week 1 of the NFL season.
Heading into the game as six-point underdogs, Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid led his team to a massive 41–14 victory in 109-degree heat—130 degrees on the artificial turf—at Texas Stadium.
The game was so hot that the Eagles used pickle juice to stay hydrated, avoid cramps and help defeat not only the Cowboys, but also the heat.
“We loaded them up last night, before the game and during the game,” Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said. “We don’t know why it works, but we only had one cramp.”
However, it was Eagles running back Duce Staley who stole the show and helped propel his team to victory.
Staley ran for 201 yards and one touchdown on 26 attempts, while adding four catches for 61 yards through the air.
However, it was Reid who came out of the gate swinging, calling a successful onside kick to begin the game and set the tone for the season.
“He’s not holding anything back,” Staley said. “He takes chances as a coach — that’s what you want as a player.”
“It caught me off guard,” Philadelphia linebacker Jeremiah Trotter said. “It was a great way to start the game off. It gave us momentum and we kept going from there.”
Before the Cowboys knew it, they were staring at a 14-0 hole to begin the second quarter and an even bigger hole at 24-6 heading back into the locker room at the half.

The only thing hotter than the turf that day were the Eagles.
Eagles fans will be hoping that this Thursday’s opener resembles the one that took place 25 years ago, while Cowboys fans will be hoping for the opposite.
Coming off one of the most dominant Super Bowl performances of all time against Reid himself, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles will look to roll over that momentum as they defend their crown.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys will look to play inspired ball even though they just traded arguably their best player, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers a week before the season begins.
It was a surprising and jarring trade that shook the NFL world and altered the landscape.
The Cowboys will now be fighting for their lives just to make the postseason, as most are already writing them off. Parsons, however, now makes Green Bay every bit a Super Bowl contender.

The NFL season is nearly here.
After months of offseason discourse, predictions, trades, old faces in new places, retirements, the lulls of the preseason, there is finally real football to be played.
And it begins at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night, in front of what will surely be a fired-up Philly crowd.
It won’t be 109 degrees, and there likely won’t be any pickle juice on the sideline, but there will be Super Bowl banner No.2 lifted into the rafters.
