There’s a reason people joke that McDonald’s Sprite “hits different.” It’s not the brand, but rather it’s the syrup ratio. When you make Sprite at home, you realize that the real magic comes from the right balance of citrus, sweetness and bubbles. This version, made with lemon, lime, sugar and sparkling water, is a reminder of how soda was meant to be: light, fresh and refreshing. And that's why the recipe for Homemade Sprite is making the social media rounds. I saw the recipe on Brown's Instagram, but he credits Roice Bethel (@noflakeysalt) in the caption. If you do some nosing around on social media, you'll find other soda enthusiasts giving it a try too.The process is simple but effective. Rubbing citrus zest into sugar releases natural oils, infusing the sugar with bright flavor before hot water turns it into a syrup. Straining out the zest leaves you with a smooth soda base. From there, it’s as easy as pouring syrup into a glass, squeezing in fresh lime juice and topping it off with sparkling water for the freshest soda you've ever tasted.Related: We Tried 14 Different Orange Sodas and You Can Buy the Winner at Walmart
How to Make Homemade Sprite
I halved the recipe my first time around to test it without wasting too many ingredients, but even if you make Brown's full recipe, it makes only about six glasses. To make it, you'll need lemon and lime zest, sugar, boiling water, lime juice, sparkling water and ice.
Place the sugar in a medium bowl. Using your hands, rub the lemon and lime zest into the sugar until it’s fragrant and fully incorporated. This step is crucial because the oils from the zest give the syrup its bold citrus flavor.Pour in boiling water and whisk until the sugar dissolves completely. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into another bowl to remove the zest. You’ll be left with a smooth lemon-lime syrup. Let it cool before using. (I had a bit of zest end up in my syrup, but it didn't change the flavor or texture and was fine to drink.)
To serve, fill a glass with ice. Add about ¼ cup of the syrup, squeeze in the juice of half a lime (I actually used a whole lime), and top with sparkling water. Stir gently and enjoy immediately.Related: We Tried 9 Prebiotic & Probiotic Sodas and You Can Buy Our Top Pick at Costco
My Honest Thoughts
This recipe took a bit more work than popping open a can, but once I took a sip, I understood the payoff. The flavor is brighter than bottled Sprite, with just the right amount of sweetness.
The lime juice (mine had a little pulp in it) at the end gives it an extra tangy kick that cuts through the syrup, keeping it from being too heavy. Using chilled sparkling water keeps it crisp and refreshing, especially over ice.
I loved that it wasn’t overly sweet or too fizzy, and it didn’t leave that syrupy aftertaste you sometimes get with canned sodas. Plus, the fact that it’s full of vitamin C made me feel like I was sipping something that was at least a little good for me.
The only downside is that homemade Sprite loses fizz quickly because it doesn’t trap high-pressure CO₂ the way factory-sealed bottles do. That means you’ll want to drink it fresh and right away, but that’s part of the charm. What you lose in bubbles, you gain in real flavor, nutrients and sweetness control.
For a healthier alternative when you’re craving soda, I thought this recipe was absolutely worth it. You could make a batch of syrup and keep it in the fridge so you could quickly make a DIY Sprite when you need a refreshing drink. It would also be a fun project to do with your kids, which is what I might do the next time I make this (and there will be a next time).
