Rochester faith leaders urge men to prioritize health with free prostate cancer screenings

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Local faith leaders are urging men to prioritize their health by getting prostate screenings.

They are hosting a screening of the film “The Black Walnut” at the Church of Love Faith Center, which addresses disparities in prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality rates among Black men. The event, sponsored by the University of Rochester Medical Center, will offer free prostate screenings on Saturday.

“We see it all the time,” Dr. James Cooper, pastor of Love Fellowship Worship Center, said. “Men don’t go to the doctor as often as our women go or pay attention to their bodies as much as women do. Many times we have a big boy syndrome.”

One faith leader knows from personal experience that screening saves lives.

“Come out, brother, get the information, get tested, get screened and also get camaraderie,” Bishop Jeffrey Melvin, pastor of Power House Kingdom Cathedral Church of God in Christ, said.

Melvin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, but now it is nearly undetectable.

“It was through the roof in 2017, and so I did what was needed, and I’m still here alive to talk about it,” he said.

Pastor D. Christopher Rourk of New Vision Ministries emphasized the importance of early detection.

“Don’t wait till it gets too far gone,” said Rourk. “The earlier detection is a better chance for you to get it fixed or situated.”

Pastor Nate McFarland, also a prostate cancer survivor, shared the same doctor as Melvin, and they eventually came together to offer the free screenings.

“They laid out the red carpet,” Melvin said. “(They said) we will send you doctors, we will do testing on-site, whatever is needed. This is what we do. We try to save lives.”

The pastors encourage men of all ethnicities, including those in their 20s and 30s, to get tested. The faith leaders hope to inspire any man hesitant about screenings to take action.

“Knowledge is power. Come get this information,” said Rourk. “We’re pleading to the community— everybody.”

“Do it for you and the ones that you love,” Cooper said.

The film screening and free prostate screenings will take place at Church of Love Faith Center Saturday, Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
