With some more NHL news coming out of the GM meetings in Detroit, we’ll take another quick lap around the hockey world with some updates on a few items for Wednesday afternoon.
The NHL’s schedule changes for next season (2026-27) came up, the USA Hockey Hall of Fame announced their new inductees, the subject of 19-year-olds in the AHL got more talk, the Carolina Hurricanes showed off their new alternate jerseys and a comedian had a funny moment with a member of his audience.
Let’s take a look at what’s going on around the NHL today:
NHL regular season schedule change update
This is a big deal. Pierre LeBrun reported from the GM and coaches meetings in Detroit that the start of the 2026-27 season is going to get bumped up to late September so the Stanley Cup can be awarded earlier in June (hopefully this means an in-person draft?). And, again, starting next year the NHL regular season will be 84 games.
As reported before but now the NHL has started to put it together, the regular season will begin in late September for 2026-27 and Cup awarded mid June. Pre-season shortened and regular season extended to 84 games.

The 2025 induction class for the USA Hockey Hall of Fame was announced on Wednesday. Joe Pavelski, Zach Parise, Scott Gomez, Bruce Bennett and Tara Mounsey will be honored on Dec. 10 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

An update on the new CBA allowing NHL teams to place one 19-year-old player in the AHL. Pierre LeBrun reports that won’t begin until the 2026-27 season, and there are some obvious concerns from the CHL about how that could impact their league. LeBrun also reported NHL head coaches had a Q & A session with some NHL refs. Defenseman Rodwin Dionicio cleared waivers on Wednesday. The Anaheim Ducks will terminate his contract. I’m a fan of comedians who work a crowd. But what happens when a performer asks the guy in the front row what he does for a living and he takes out his teeth?
