Pet preparedness is important for those “ruff” days.
After a moderate quake from Baja California shook up parts of San Diego County on Monday night, the San Diego Humane Society is reminding San Diegans to keep their furry friends safe.
For National Preparedness Month, which started Sept. 1, the San Diego Humane Society is highlighting pet safety and helping residents craft their own evacuation plan.
“When disaster hits, beloved pets and farm animals are often at risk of being left behind simply because owners are not ready,” Jordan Frey, marketing manager for SDHS, said.
Common natural disasters in San Diego, like wildfires and earthquakes, often come with little to no warning. As part of their public resources, SDHS is sharing tips for animal lovers on creating a disaster plan.
Some ways to stay prepared include creating an emergency pet-kit with at least a two-week supply of food, water, and medication. Don’t forget a cushy crate with some favorite toys, veterinary information, and vaccination records.
Some pets are more stubborn than others; it’s important to ensure they’re comfortable getting in carriers in stressful situations.
For livestock or large animals, keep trailers ready. Work with neighbors to identify safe holding areas, especially large open spaces that can provide refuge during fires. Practice loading and unloading animals so it’s second nature in an emergency.
SDHS also advises never leaving pets behind. Also, have up-to-date ID tags and microchips for all animals, even indoor pets. In case of an emergency when you’re away, have a plan in place with a trusted neighbor.
“Our pets can’t plan for emergencies — that’s our job,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and chief executive officer at the San Diego Humane Society. “A little preparation now can save their lives when every second counts.”
