Sarah Hyland, who’s best known for her role as Haley Dunphy in Modern Family, has some big shoes to fill! The TV star has been tapped to play iconic ‘60s singer Connie Francis in the Broadway play "Just In Time."
Gracie Lawrence recently finished her run in the role, and the addition of Hyland, 34, to the cast was announced on Wednesday, September 3. Lawrence, 28, who received a Tony nomination for her performance, will take the stage one last time on October 5, and Hyland’s debut performance is scheduled just three days later on October 8.
"Just In Time," which debuted in April, is a biopic about legendary singer Bobby Darin, whose hits like “Splish, Splash,” “Dream Lover” and more rocketed him to fame in the ‘50s. Francis’ story is woven in with Darin’s, and the play takes a closer look at the budding relationship between the two.

The musical showcases their whirlwind romance in the late 1950s and Francis’ father’s fierce opposition that eventually tore them apart after he allegedly forced Darin to leave one of her rehearsals at gunpoint.
“My father had such a dislike for him,” she told Fox News in 2018. “He even tried to shoot him. He came with a gun in his pocket. And Bobby had a bad heart. He had rheumatic fever as a child, which is why he died at the age of 37. I was really afraid of my father retaliating against Bobby. So I stayed away from Bobby, as far away as I could. So during that period of time, we kept in touch through letters.”

Francis, who died on July 16 at age 87, later admitted that Darin was the “love of her life,” a bittersweet confession that highlights the importance of their relationship in Just In Time.
While Hyland isn’t a stranger to Broadway, with her debut performance at age 16, she only recently returned to the stage with roles in "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Great Gatsby" earlier this year. However, her role as Francis in "Just In Time" truly feels like a next-level moment.
