San Jose: Driver arrested after hitting and killing man in wheelchair

SAN JOSE — A driver was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after police say he hit and killed a man in a wheelchair over the weekend then fled the scene.

The collision was reported at 2:34 a.m. Sunday near the Magic Sands mobile home community, according to the San Jose Police Department. An initial investigation determined that a man driving a silver 2017 Mercedes-Benz sedan was traveling north on Lily Ann Way approaching Hayes Avenue, when he hit a man in a wheelchair who had been on the far curb of Hayes, then crashed into an iron fence.

    The victim was taken to a hospital where he died, police said. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

    When officers arrived, the driver had left the site, but police said he was found at a nearby home and arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. Police did not identify the driver in a news release issued Wednesday.

    Sunday’s collision marked the city’s 22nd traffic death of the year, and the 12th to involve a pedestrian who died. San Jose had recorded 35 traffic deaths, including 13 pedestrian victims, at the same point in 2024.
