Matlock was a hit for CBS right out of the gate when it premiered in September 2024, so much so that it scored the first series renewal of the season after airing only two episodes. And with that twist ending that changed everything up, we can only speculate on what will happen in Season 2.
As the teaser trailer for the new season says, most of what we know about Matty is based in truth, but it's still a lie. Intriguing, right?
Here's what we know so far.

Is there a trailer for Matlock Season 2?
CBS released a first look at the new season of Matlock in which Matty declares, "I could burn this courthouse to the ground, and still have them eating butterscotch out of my hand."

Who is in the cast of Matlock?
Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock (aka Madeline Kingston)
Kathy Bates (CBS)Kathy Bates headlines the series as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm to bring to justice the person she feels is responsible for the opioid overdose death of her daughter. While searching for the truth, Matty uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to help win cases.
"Matty really now enjoys being useful," Bates told Parade on a visit to the Matlock set. "That’s part of ageism, too, which is a whole other level that we are addressing here, is that she gets in that way with the discriminatory deal that they have against ageism and others. She feels useful in a way that she hasn’t in a long time. She’s been very depressed in the last ten years since her daughter passed away. Now this has rejuvenated her. So, there’s that level that’s going on that’s totally unexpected."
What remains to be seen is if Bates will continue to use the Matty Matlock identity when she returns for Season 2 or if she will assume her true identity of Madeline Kingston.
Skye P. Marshall
Skye P. Marshall (CBS)Skye P. Marshall plays Olympia, a formidable attorney with a thirst for justice and a key rainmaker at a prestigious New York law firm. She is in the middle of a divorce from her husband, Julian. Juggling work and life, Olympia remains laser-focused and is not the easiest to impress, which is apparent when she is tasked with adding Matty to her team.
"There was this line in one of the episodes where Madeline Matlock says, 'We’re not quite friends, but we’re not just colleagues,'" Marshall told Parade. "I really loved that line because that’s exactly where we are right now. But you will start to see once the castle wall that Olympia has upstarts to come down, which only happens with trust, that that becomes yet another love story outside of Olympia and Julian, the love story that you will see between Olympia and Madeline Matlock."
Jason Ritter
Jason Ritter (CBS)Jason Ritter plays Julian, Olympia’s soon-to-be ex-husband and the son of the firm’s managing partner, Senior (Beau Bridges).
"For me the challenge was, as a lawyer, you have to have a certain amount of gravity and seriousness," Ritter told Parade. "In my life growing up, my general energy when dealing with people is the equivalent of when you see a dog in the park, see a bigger dog and they turn and they show their bellies. There’d be people who would make a decision about me coming up like, 'Who do you think you are?' And I had to be like, 'I’m not a threat, I’m not in this fight with you. You win whatever fight. You’re bigger than me, I’m not a part of it.' So, there was an element doing this character who has to really stand his ground a lot of times where I was very nervous about that feeling."

Leah Lewis (CBS)Leah Lewis plays Sarah, an uber-ambitious younger associate who is not happy to be forced to work with Matty, but comes around to her unique way of researching cases.
Who is joining the cast of Matlock for Season 2?
Justina Machado

The former One Day At a Time star will recur as Eva, Senior’s (Beau Bridges) fourth wife, when the legal drama returns. It marks a Jane the Virgin reunion as Machado and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman worked on that series together as well.

As with Season 1, the cases for Season 2 will dramatize and reflect what is going on in Matty's life.
"It's about picking out which cases are going to articulate or dramatize certain things so that it takes some of the weight off of the storytelling, so that she doesn’t have to say, 'I’m feeling this way,'" showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told Parade. "Because it’s Kathy Bates, we can go to her as they’re talking about a case with a look, and you understand this is taking her back to her personal story. And it’s a step on that journey, too. It allows us to do a lot at once. I always say that every line has to do three things. It has to hide the exposition, show some emotion and also be amusing. Not when we’re in the deep, heavy stuff. They’re like origami lines is kind of what I describe it as. They can’t just serve as one thing, because we have a lot to pack into our episodes."

Are there any spoilers for Season 2 of Matlock?
Matty questions the paternity of the man claiming to be Alfie’s father (Nico Nikotera). Also, the team takes on an arson case while Olympia tries to protect Julian’s involvement in the Wellbrexa case.
Urman gave us a tease: “What I believe about secrets in drama is that you juice them for as long as they can hold, and then once they come out there’s so much more drama that comes,” Urman said. “We have to deal with the ramifications and who knew what and who didn’t say what and all of that becomes really important in the second season.
“We leave Matty’s life in a bit of a cliffhanger in terms of things that are happening to her in her life, professionally and personally. So, we’re going to be digging into that. And then what I’m thinking about for next season is just how those twist together.
“I look at plot as this double helix. It’s the genetic code, and it’s got to go back and forth and back and forth, and they have to all link up to create something new. So, that’s what I’m focused on for next year, how the pieces that we reveal at the end of the episode come back and create something new, but still have the same DNA.”
