The Grauer School has tapped Brogan O’Bryan to lead its high school surf program, bringing his extensive outdoor teaching and adventure experience to the classroom and surf team. O’Bryan will teach Surf PE and coach the school’s competitive high school surf team.
“Brogan is a passionate and dedicated teacher with a deep love for the outdoors, education, and sports. We are happy to have him join our talented staff,” said Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, M.Ed., head of school for The Grauer School.
Founded in 1991, The Grauer School is an independent private school serving students in grades seven through 12 in a college preparatory environment in Encinitas and surrounding Northern San Diego communities. With a student-teacher ratio of 7:1, the school emphasizes a relationship-driven approach and its signature Learn by Discovery philosophy. Grauer encourages six core values in its students: compassion, self-advocacy, perseverance, accountability, intellectual curiosity, and resourcefulness, and has served as a model for hundreds of private schools worldwide through the Small Schools Coalition, according to a news release.
O’Bryan has a Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Arizona and a single-subject teaching credential in physical education from Point Loma Nazarene University. He is also a certified Wilderness First Responder, Lifeguard, Dive Master, and Rock Climbing and Hiking Guide.
He began his career teaching fifth-grade English and math in Min Buri, Thailand, before moving into outdoor adventure teaching, including serving as a dive master in Thailand and as a riverboarding guide in New Zealand.
For the past three years, he has worked as a course director and facilitator for Positive Adventures, leading week-long outdoor programs for up to 140 students throughout California.
