This fall, the city of El Cajon is once again asking the community to help shine a spotlight on those hometown heroes. Nominations are now open for the 2025 Veteran of the Year Award, an honor that recognizes veterans who have carried their spirit of service into civilian life.
The award celebrates men and women whose leadership and volunteer efforts have left a lasting mark on El Cajon and the greater San Diego region. Past recipients have been recognized for everything from mentoring younger veterans to leading local service projects to lending their talents to community organizations.
To be eligible, nominees must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Military or National Guard, live in El Cajon or belong to a veterans organization based in the city, and demonstrate significant contributions to the community since their service.
Special consideration is given to a veteran’s work within their nominating organization, support for El Cajon residents, and involvement in the broader veteran community. Members of the El Cajon Veterans Coalition are not eligible while serving on the Coalition.
Nominations will be accepted from Sept. 2 through Oct. 17, 2025. Each packet must include an application form, a copy of the veteran’s DD-214 or NGB-22 (with Social Security Number redacted), a summary of accomplishments, and two photographs—one in uniform if available, and one current. Original photos will be returned on request.
Submissions will be reviewed by the El Cajon Veterans Coalition, with the 2025 Veteran of the Year announced Oct. 31, 2025. The honoree will be recognized at the Veterans Day Celebration hosted by American Legion Post 303 and will also receive acknowledgment during the City’s State of the City Address or a City Council meeting.
