Arizona State football drops in AP poll after underwhelming win over NAU

Arizona State football dropped to No. 12 in The Associated Press’ first top 25 poll of the season following its underwhelming 38-19 win against NAU.

The Sun Devils did move up in the Coaches Poll, landing at No. 10.

ASU entered the season at No. 11, its highest preseason college football ranking since 1998. Arizona State’s win on Saturday was underwhelming when you factor in the Sun Devils were 28.5-point favorites headed into the matchup.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham said postgame he was out-coached in the game and that the team needs to clean up the mistakes, such as penalties, going forward.

The Sun Devils will have a tougher test this week as they travel to Starkville to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday. The Bulldogs are coming off a 34-17 win against Southern Miss.

Ohio State climbs to No. 1 in AP Top 25 poll

Ohio State climbed to No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll on Tuesday, while LSU and Miami moved into the top five, and Florida State jumped back into the rankings at the expense of Alabama, which plummeted to its lowest spot in 17 seasons.

The Buckeyes received 55 of 66 first-place votes to move up two spots after their win over preseason No. 1 Texas. Ohio State is at the top of a regular-season Top 25 for the first time since November 2015.

Texas dropped to No. 7 following the loss to Ohio State.

LSU jumped six spots after winning at Clemson and Miami jumped up five spots after its victory over Notre Dame.

The biggest movers in the poll were Florida State and Alabama after the Seminoles’ 31-17 victory in their head-to-head matchup: Florida State, 15 spots outside the Top 25 in the preseason, is now No. 14. Alabama dropped all the way from No. 8 to No. 21 — its lowest ranking since it was No. 24 in the 2008 preseason poll.

Utah, at No. 25, joins Florida State as the new teams in the AP Top 25 Poll.

The Utes had received the second-most points, behind BYU, among teams outside the preseason Top 25. The Utes are ranked for the first time since last October, when they were at the front end of a seven-game losing streak.

Boise State, which had been No. 25, received no votes following its 34-7 loss at South Florida. The Broncos had appeared in 14 straight polls. The other team to drop out of the poll was No. 17 Kansas State, which followed its season opening loss to Iowa State with a close home win over FCS team North Dakota.
