Diamondbacks drop painful game in extra innings to Rangers

PHOENIX — The winning runs for the Texas Rangers against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday came from a comebacker that ricocheted off relief pitcher Juan Burgos and skipped into foul ground in the 10th inning.

Two runs scored on the single from Alejandro Osuna, Burgos walked off with the trainer and the Diamondbacks went quietly in the bottom half for a 7-5 loss.

Burgos was not the only player to leave with an apparent injury, either, as left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was carted off the field in the sixth inning after he went down holding his right leg.

The D-backs led the game 3-0 and then 5-3, blowing a save in the ninth inning with Texas down to its last strike.

The Rangers rallied for two runs, both charged to Kyle Backhus. Rookie Cody Freeman, who hit a two-run home run earlier in the ballgame, hit the game-tying single on a 2-2 count with two outs off Jake Woodford.

All-in-all, a painful night for the Diamondbacks on several levels.

The game started as well as it possibly could have.

Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo smashed back-to-back pitches over the left-field wall to lead off the first inning against Rangers starter Patrick Corbin.

Tyler Locklear hit a solo shot to end an 0-for-20 slump in the third for a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson delivered a quality start with six innings and three earned runs, but he was also bit by the long ball. Freeman’s shot cut the Arizona lead to one, and Wyatt Langford tied the game with a solo shot in the sixth.

The sixth was a game-altering inning, as the top half ended on a Blaze Alexander diving catch in his first start in center field. Gurriel Jr., however, was carted off the field for a non-contact injury. Gurriel stayed down for several minutes holding his right leg.

In the bottom half, Alexander punched the go-ahead triple down the right-field line and scored on a Gabriel Moreno single.
