University’s softball team might just be fed up with playing second fiddle.
Since they won the program’s only Class 3A state softball title in 2019, the Bulldogs have been the state runner-up three times in the past five seasons.
But if the first couple weeks of the fall season are any indication, University may be as well equipped as any squad to take home the crown this October.
The Bulldogs do everything at an elite level — hit, pitch, play defense, run the bases, etc., etc.
University’s legion of fans, and interested spectators throughout the state, may learn a lot about the Bulldogs’ championship chances when University faces Eaton — the three-time defending 3A state champion — on the road Oct. 2.
But the Bulldogs won’t need to wait nearly that long to receive a legitimate state tournament-like measuring stick.

(Alex McIntyre/Greeley Tribune file photo)University will play host to 4A contender Palmer Ridge at 12:30 p.m. during the second of two games the Bulldogs will play Saturday during their home tournament.
University came into the season ranked second, behind Eaton, in CHSAA’s 3A preseason coaches poll.
The Bears entered the season ranked eighth in 4A.
Both teams came into this week undefeated — the Bulldogs at 8-0 and Palmer Ridge at 6-0.
Something has to given. University fans hope that “something” isn’t the Bulldogs’ surplus of early season momentum.
